FAQ

While this blog covers a great deal of student/parent questions, and the other pages go into great detail about our admission process, many of our students have similar specific questions about UGA Admissions. As such,  we have tried to compile a list of some of these common questions:

  • When will I hear a decision on my Freshman/Transfer application? How will I receive a decision?
    • While we cannot predict an exact date for a decision, we have created a Timelines page to try and help you get a rough understanding of when we release decisions. When we release decisions, a student will be able to view them on their MyStatus page, and we will also mail decision letters to students.
  • Why does it take as long as it does to hear a decision from UGA?
    • We have over 22,000 freshman applications and over 4,000 transfer applications yearly, and in order to make good decisions, we need time to review these files. While we want to make decisions in a timely fashion, we also want to make the best decisions possible, and that takes time.
  • Does UGA take demonstrated interest into account when making decisions, such as the number of visits to campus, the number of contacts with admissions officials, etc.?
    • UGA does not take demonstrated interest into account when reviewing files, as there are a number of applicants who do not have the resources to do certain activities, and as well, demonstrated interest does not equal academic and personal strengths. We want to admit strong students and strong people, and so we look at the factors that give us that information.
  • Will my choice of major have an impact on a decision, and how can I change my major?
    • Your choice of major is for UGA to be able to advise you properly if you enroll, but it does not have an impact on a decision. If you enroll, you will be able to change your major in the weeks/months prior to orientation using the UGA Athena student system.
  • Does the term I apply for have an impact on a decision?
    • There is no difference in our review process between Spring, Summer or Fall terms. Our admissions process might be more competitive for future years (2016 vs 2015) due to a more competitive or larger applicant pool, but within a specific calendar year, there is no difference in a decision.
  • How do I calculate what my HS GPA is for UGA Admission purposes?
    • When we receive a HS transcript, we focus on the grades on the transcript, and we do not look at the GPA calculated by the high school. UGA calculates our own admission GPA, as we need a common form of a GPA based on core HS grades, and the HS GPA on a transcript varies from school to school and state to state. See my Calculate a UGA GPA post for more details on how we do this.
  •  What courses should I take to be admitted to UGA?
    • Freshmen: There are no specific courses that will lead to admission to UGA, but rather we want you to challenge yourself to the best of your ability in your HS while still being successful in your classes. This means that over your 4 year HS career, you should look at the core academic areas and take classes that will prepare you for college, such as Honors/Advanced courses, AP/IB/Dual Enrollment work, etc.
    • Transfers: UGA does not have any specific courses that you need to take to transfer into UGA, but you should review your intended major in the UGA Bulletin to see what courses are needed for graduating in this major, and if the department has any suggestions for transfer courses.
  • Does the timing of my application impact a decision?
    • Freshmen: While the timing of the application has no impact on a decision (applications sent in on the first day & the last day are treated the same), applying earlier gives you and your counselor/teacher more time to submit documents/required materials. We heavily suggest not waiting until the deadline.
    • Transfers: While there is no difference in a decision due to when you apply, we make decisions on a rolling basis, and the earlier your have a complete application, the earlier you will most likely hear a decision (with some exceptions).
  •  What are the minimum requirements for admission to UGA?
    • Freshmen: The only minimum requirements to UGA are set forth by the Board of Regents (BOR) for the state of Georgia, and they are as follows: SAT minimum requirements for research universities-SAT CR: 430, SAT M: 400 or ACT E: 17, ACT M: 17. In addition, the high school course requirements can be found in the BOR Staying on Course document. Due to the strength of the applicant pool, you will see that the average SAT/ACT scores and the academic course selections for enrolling UGA students are generally much higher than the minimum requirements.
    • Transfers: The Admissions Office sets minimum academic consideration levels for review of transfer applicants. These are not minimum requirements, but rather academic levels that we expect in order for a transfer student to be in consideration for admission. We do not take Work In Progress courses into account in our review, and you must meet consideration levels by the deadline(s). A student meeting or exceeding these consideration levels is not guaranteed transfer admission.
  • When can I be considered for admission to UGA?
    •  Freshmen: Our freshman application generally opens up in August/September of your senior year, and so you would generally apply during your senior year for admission into Summer or Fall term following your HS graduation. We do have freshman who apply to start in the Spring, but that is a rare situation.
    • Transfers: The main part of our review of transfer applicants is to be able to look at your academic work at another college. As such, transfers can only apply for a term that starts at least a year beyond HS graduation (so if you graduate in May of 2015, you could apply for Summer 2016 or beyond). In addition, we need to have at least 30 hours of completed college work on a transcript by the deadline so we can get a sense academically of what your are like as a college student. At the same time, we set our deadlines so that we can respond with a decision in a manageable time frame for both the applicant and our office. As such, most transfer students start at UGA with at least 1.5 years of work prior to enrolling.
  • My parent(s) graduated from UGA. Does that have an impact on my decision?
    • Legacy does not have an impact on an admission decision, and neither does your gender, ethnicity, high school/county, state, or eye color. There are always a number of rumors that are associated with college admissions, most of which are false, so I suggest you ask on the blog if you hear about a rumor.
  • What matters most in the admissions review?
    •  Freshmen: Academics come first, with a focus on how you have challenged yourself over your 4 years in HS and how you have done in those classes. While we do look at the SAT/ACT scores, what you do over 3-4 years is much more important than what you do in 3-4 hours on a Saturday morning. In addition, for many applicants we will also look at your extra-curricular activities, essays, recommendations, etc.
    • Transfers: We focus only on your academic work from your previous colleges, and we look at all your college work, not just the latest colleges/terms. As such, we need official transcripts from all colleges ever attended.
  • If I apply/am accepted to a specific term at UGA, does that mean I have to attend UGA for that term?
    • When you are admitted to UGA for a specific term, that means that you need to start UGA for that term in order to continue your future enrollment at UGA. Admission is only good to start in the term you have been admitted, and it does not carry over to future terms if you choose not to attend. As such, we heavily suggest applying for the term for which you actually want to attend, and since there is no difference in the decision process (contrary to some rumors), this will make sure you are able to actually attend UGA.

    1. We reviewed your file just like any other file. At the end of the decision process, there were a small group of students (300 or so) who we did not have space to admit for Fall, but we decided to admit for Spring instead of denying them.

  6. Hi,
I'm a transfer student that applied for Fall 2018 semester. I applied on February 21 and now on March 23, I still haven't heard a thing. What's going on? I sent transcripts in and they received them March 6. Would that be what's taking so long?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Currently, we have about 3,000 transfer applicants for summer and fall, and by February 21, roughly 2,600 of them had already applied. If you sent transcripts to us by March 6, then that is the starting point for things, since we do not review files until they are complete and ready for review. I am guessing by 3/6, even more applications were complete and ready for review than the earlier number. It takes a while to review each file, and each transcript, and if admitted post each course and each grade and articulate the work. Please be patient as we review files.

  7. What does the grade level mean on the transfer equivalency website? For example 1GXX does that mean that class only counts as 1 hour on the transfer transcript?

    1. The 1 in 1GXX stands for the level of student at UGA, with 1 being a freshman level class, 2 being sophomore, etc.

  8. Hello, I am a senior in high school who has gotten accepted into UGA and plans to attend in the fall of 2018. I have a few questions regarding housing, financial aid, and scholarships. I just recently received the official hard copy of my acceptance letter from UGA. Among the papers I received, there is one where it shows my estimated cost for attending UGA 2017-2018. It includes all expenses, subtracts Zell Miller and another scholarship, and shows the total at the bottom. I am wondering since it estimated how much Zell Miller would pay, does that imply without a doubt that I received the Zell Miller scholarship? If I receive the Zell Miller scholarship, does that I mean also receive the HOPE scholarship as well, or is it only possible to receive just one? When and how will I know whether I receive the HOPE or Zell Miller scholarship, as well as financial aid for UGA? Also, how will my senior year grades be taken in account-- will UGA look at my first semester grades or the grades I have when I graduate? I applied for my financial aid in the December of 2017. However, I heard from other students they applied around Jan of 2018. Is my financial aid application alright, or do I have to apply again for the year 2018? Also, I am an in state local student of Athens, GA. When I went with my school on previous trips to UGA, I heard from speakers there that local students are exempted from the mandatory first year dorm stay. Would it be alright if I attended UGA from home for all 4 years, or is it also mandatory that I stay in the dorms for my first year as well?
Please let me know and thank you so much!

    1. The Hope/Zell scholarship is an either/or, so you would not get both. The information given on the award letter is an estimate, but the state determines which you would receive, and they will use your final grades and SAT/ACT data. You can work with our Financial Aid office for both the need based aid and the Hope/Zell questions.

As for living arrangements, it is fine if you live from home all four years (the living on campus situation is only for freshman year and local students can exempt this). You would need to work with Housing to be given this exemption, but this is not tough.

Please let me know if you have any more questions!

    ReplyDelete

    1. It is generally a little late in the term to be able to drop a class, as generally the low grade would stay on the transcript. This might cause some issues if you decide to drop it at this late of a date.

    1. I meant satisfy*. Sorry for the typo

    2. There are two steps to this - 1) For the elective classes, you can work with the academic department of the class (so for English, go to http://www.bulletin.uga.edu/MajorsGeneral.aspx?MajorId=60 to see the initial contact person), and see if the course can be changed to a specific UGA course after the department reviews information on your transfer course. 2) You would work with your academic advisor on how specific courses come in and apply to a degree, as they will know best.

  14. I am an in-state newly admitted transfer student. In the next year or so, my parents may move due to my father's job. Does this impact my residency designation? Will I continue to be considered in-state?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Here is a cut/past from the state policy manual - "If the parent or United States court-appointed legal guardian of a dependent student currently classified as in-state for tuition purposes establishes domicile outside of the State of Georgia after having established and maintained domicile in the State of Georgia, such student may retain his/her in-state tuition classification so long as such student remains continuously enrolled in a public postsecondary educational institution in this state, regardless of the domicile of such student’s parent or United States court-appointed legal guardian."

As such, as long as you continue with courses and do not sit out for a length of time, you will be considered a GA resident. By continuously, they do not mean you have to attend summer term (a question we often hear).

  18. How do I get my AP credits counted towards transferable credits.

    ReplyDelete

    1. That is not up to us, but instead is up to your college. As stated on the review process page, "Advanced placement (AP/IB) credit listed as specific courses with specific hours and college course titles and course numbers on a college transcript may be transferable.". So it depends on if your college sends us the AP scores on the official transcript this way.

    2. I am applying for spring of 2019 as a transfer student. I applied and sent my transcript from the college that I went to, but I was only credited with 29 hours instead of the 31 that I had. The university that I went to wouldn't put my AP credits on my transcript, so I am having UNG (which I am going to in the fall) send my transcript that has the AP credits on it. I got it sent today, so UGA will have in about 3 days.

      Delete
    3. Once you see we have received the new transcript, send an email to our head of evaluation at jemond@uga.edu and let him know you have new work on a transcript. He will then have it be re-reviewed without a new application or payment since it is the same term. Generally, we hold off on any decision where we see in-progress summer work, but we must not have seen this in your case.

  21. Hello Dr. Graves. I'm a returning student, currently enrolled at GSU Perimeter College, and hoping to transfer to UGA in Fall 2019 or Spring 2020. I earned my GED in 2004, and enrolled in Georgia Perimeter College for 2 semesters in 2009, during which I had to take several classes to satisfy College Preparatory Curriculum requirements. I had to leave school for family reasons, but I returned to Perimeter in Fall of 2017. I now hope to take 2 UGA minors which have 2 of these CPC courses as requirements. Are you able to tell me if these courses will transfer for college credit or if I will need to retake them? If they will not transfer, will they still be used by UGA to calculate my transfer GPA?

  22. For EA, does UGA take in to account my grades based on what major I am applying for. For example, I am planning to apply as an engineering major. Would UGA take into account that my math grades are high making me a good fit for engineering or just look at my transcript as a whole?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. We do not focus on your major when looking at your academics (or for looking at a file in the admissions process). For academic preparation for your major though, we do suggest taking rigorous courses in areas leading towards your major (so for STEM majors, strength in math and science) along with core course areas such as English.

    1. Generally, it takes 3-5 weeks from the time of the exam until we receive the score results. As such, we state that all test scores must be both taken and the scores requested to be sent to UGA by the application deadline. As such, we cannot use the October ACT for Early Action.

  36. hello, I have a question on the housing policy about freshman living on campus. From my understanding, any freshman student is required to live on campus unless they are residents of the immediate bordering counties of Athens-Clarke County. However, I know a few people who graduated from my school who were accepted into UGA for Spring 2019 who are not required to live on campus, and are marked as commuters. Is this reason due to them completing 30 or more credit hours in high school during Dual enrollment, so they were clasified as a second-year student? I know that no one has been accepted or anything like that yet, but if I am, I would like to know if I am eligible to live off campus if I take 30 or more transferable credits through dual enrollment by the end of the school year! Thank You!

For example, I have taken freshman English honors, AP Lang and Comp, gotten a credit for English 1101 in my dual enrollment for passing the AP Lang and Comp exam, and have taken English 1102 DE. I therefore have technically taken 3 English courses, but have the 4 credits. So, what should I do?

  38. Hi, where I go to school (Forsyth County schools), my AP classes are given +1 point to our GPA. For example, an 88 (B) in an AP class would count as an A when calculating our GPA. However, on my transcript that AP class shows that it is an 88 still, however the GPA under it shows that it was calculated as an A. When I am self reporting my grades, should I count that class as an A or a B? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. For every single freshman applicant, you need to report the actual grade seen on the transcript (so you would report a B grade in this instance). We know the grading policies of the school and calculate our GPA based on the grades on the transcript and our knowledge of each school's grading policy.

    1. No, there is not a tuition discount for the children of state employees (not for teachers, USG or UGA employees, etc.). There is an in-state tuition provision for state employees and military personnel who work in GA but are residents of another state.

    2. Thank you for your quick response. That is my exact situation. I am state employee but live in another state. I know about the UGA request for out-of-state tuition differential waiver. There did not seem to be much to the form. Are those usually granted without much trouble once they can confirm the state employee status?

I would also be interested to know if you are aware of any way that my child would be eligible for the GA Hope based on my employment within the state of GA. Thank you again for your response.

    3. The waiver program is handled by the UGA Registrar, but generally there is no issue with these if he student/family meets the requirements set forth for the waiver. The HOPE issue is a little more complicated, and I suggest you reach out to the Ga Student Finance Commission (GSFC) about this.

  43. I am planning on applying for transfer for Fall 2019 and I understand that only the classes completed before the deadline with factor into the decision of whether the application is considered for admission. By the time of the application deadline I will have completed 40 credit hours, but does that mean that I won't ever get credit for the classes I take this coming Spring? Or will I just get credit after they are completed, and if I am accepted?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Almost every student who applies as a transfer applicant has work currently in progress, and if they are admitted and decide to enroll, we then require the student to send us an updated transcript so we can post the new work and grades to their UGA account.

  45. On the UGA application for "personal information" my name has a suffix (III) that I listed on personal background page however on the final page for crucial data that includes my legal name the suffix does not show. Do I need to do anything to modify this pre-filled page? Also for transcripts and other documents (AP Scores and SAT) there are inconsistencies in that field being populated. Are these documents matched according to SS# or birthdate as well?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The crucial data page lists fields that are important for the application, so it does not include all fields. The suffix field is not considered crucial (so matching of documents and financial aid will not have issues with a suffix), so that is why this field is not listed on the crucial data page. As such, nothing is needed for you to do. For matching of items, we use a variety of fields to tie things to a student, from name to birthdate, address to HS code, etc. After you submit your application, you will then be able to track items on the status page to see what items and test scores are in your file, and if needed, you can contact us with any problems.

  46. For unit credits on the application how do I enter the following. We are on the semester system and semester grades appear on my transcript however one full year of AP Lang counts at 1 credit and 1 grade. Do I self report that as 2 units or 1 unit. Dual enrollment classes that are each one semester long also count as 1 credit on my transcript. would that be self reported as 1 unit

    ReplyDelete

    1. Your semester grades are .5 of a “unit”, so count them once. Any core grades that are shown as a full “unit” should then be counted twice, as two .5 units equals one full unit.

  50. Hi, I am confused about the Test Scores section on the UGA application, specifically for the SAT I. Because this is the new SAT, I am unsure how to fill out critical reading and writing boxes (because online they only give you a combined score). For the essay subscore, do I just add my 3 scores together to get a number out of 24? And is the writing multiple choice subscore the number presented out of 40?

Are all of the Freshman EA decision notifications posted on the same day (on a given date sometime before the end of November) or are the individual decisions posted as his/her application status has been determined? I know several applicants (here included) who believe their status will be updated as soon as a decision is made - so they are waking up daily and anxiously checking their application status online before they're even upright out of bed. Just wanted to confirm if this information is correct and they should continue the daily morning ritual. Thank you!

  54. Hello. My student submitted their self- reported grades- and now thinks it might have been done incorrectly. He has taken several dual enrolled courses at our local Junior College. All of the courses and grades are on his high school transcript. 1 semester of a Junior College course is the equivalent to a full year – 10 credits or more depending on the college units – so equal to two semesters. In 11th grade he had JC English with an A and two JC Social Science classes both with A’s. In the self-reporting for 11th grade he reported 2 A for English and 4 A’s for Social Sciences. Was this correct? If not will it be reviewed and seen on the high school transcript?

  73. If 2 units of high school-credit foreign language are completed in middle school (as seems to be a growing trend), does the student still need to complete multiple years in foreign language at the high school or is the middle school unit plus one in high school sufficient for admission?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This has been the norm for 15 or so years at least. In order to meet the basic requirements, we are fine with HS courses taught in the middle school serving as HS credit (credit only, not for GPA purposes, so Spanish 1 being completed in middle school means only Spanish 2 is then needed in HS. In saying this though, you are asking for the minimum needed for passing a requirement, not what might be best for admission review. Most all of our applicants (and thus accepted students) go above the minimum in their academic work, especially in their area of academic interest, so I generally do not suggest shooting for the minimum.

She is not changing her application, merely correcting erroneous information.

    1. I responded to this question when you posted it earlier on another page, but I will give you the rough information here as well. Our office can only work from official college transcripts and the information on these transcripts. We need detailed course information from the college for both any AP credit and the actual courses taken at the college. We can only transfer actual courses from another college, and not just hours, as we need to do a course by course articulation. If there is not the detailed course information on the transcript, we cannot do anything about this issue.

He has been doing good in academics so far and scored good marks 85%+ from 9th to 11th standard. He could not score well in 12th standard due to sudden sickness during final 12th standard examination period and got the low score in couple of subjects (Mathematics & Chemistry) however he passed the overall 12th standard examination. As a parent I am worried now that how 12th standard low score will affect his UGA admission process? We have already paid commitment deposit to UGA and processing for his USA VISA. My goal is to graduate in 3 years when I arrive at UGA. Is this possible with UGA? How would I make this happen if it is indeed possible?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, it is possible to graduate in under 4 years at UGA, but it depends on how you have prepared yourself for UGA. First, you would want to maximize your credit options in HS by doing well in AP/IB courses and the AP/IB exams, or you would look at taking Dual Enrollment courses in HS. (see https://reg.uga.edu/students/credit-from-testing/ap-equivalences/ for AP/IB credit info). Second, make sure you don't focus so much on getting out as you do on being a part of UGA and experiencing all that we have to offer. You can also take summer courses, you need to make sure of your major from the beginning (changing majors can make completing graduation requirements challenging with the new major), and make sure you work closely with your advisor.
