At this point in time, we have received approximately 100 Summer and 300 Fall transfer applications. The next two months or so will be tied up with several issues, from the update of Spring freshman and transfer files as Fall 2010 work comes in, to the review of the estimated 5,000-6,000 freshman applications that we still expect to apply by the Regular Decision application deadline of January 15. As you can guess, December and January are busy clean-up months, and there is not a great deal of down time.
I expect that by the end of January, our office will begin to review the transfer applications. We will begin with Summer transfers, as they are the first to enroll and need to have their decisions before the Fall applicants. As well, though, these go a little quicker as there are not as many Summer transfer applicants as compared to Fall (last year it was about 300 vs. 1,500), so these should go quickly. When that process is done, we should go straight into Fall transfers starting in mid-February, and go forward from there.
My suggestion to all transfer applicants is to make sure UGA has all transcripts from all colleges you have ever attended. If you did joint-enrollment work, get the transcript in! If you attended four colleges, get all four transcripts in! If you sent in a transcript in September, but have now completed the Fall semester, send in an updated transcript! As well, if a transcript has a different last name on it as compared to the application, send an email to admproc@uga.edu about 2 weeks after it has been requested to be sent to UGA so we can match it easier. And please remember to review the transfer web page and the transfer equivalency site (and read the equivalency instructions!) to make sure you are on the right track as far as admissions consideration.
Go Dawgs!
Hi DGraves,
ReplyDeleteA few questions:
1) Are there any change of numbers between who gets admitted for the summer? Like are more students admitted from the summer than in the fall?
2) Also, do AP credits still count? I have 27 hours that all transfer along with 10 hours from AP.
3) Last thing, one of my courses says it transfers as "ECON1E**". Does that still count as a transferrable course?
Anon:
ReplyDelete1) There is no difference in the review process for summer vs. fall, as we are looking at the same criteria.
2) If your AP credit is on your college transcript as a specific college course and number with a specific number of credit hours, then we will use it as that college course and how it transfers into UGA. Make sure that this is on the transcript sent to UGA, not just on your online credit review that you might have at your current college.
3) As I said, review the transfer equiv. instructions, as, straight from the instructions: "University System of Georgia Core Elective - Example: MATH1001 = MATH1A** Prefix (MATH), class level (1), transfer designation (A-E**) Reasons: Satisfies A through E core at University System of Georgia schools (including UGA), but no direct equivalent UGA class, or insufficient credit hours".
See I did read that but I'm still confused by the wording I guess, I know there isn't direct credit for a specific course but I couldn't tell if it counts towards the 30 hours required for admission.
ReplyDeleteAnon: If a course is a transfer elective, then it will transfer in, but since there is no exact match at UGA for the course, it comes in as an elective (and in this case, it applies to area E of the core). All transfer electives are still transfer work and will be used for both admission and towards a degree.
ReplyDeleteI have a question regarding transfer admission. What are the top area of interests that are reviewed when it comes to whether a student is admitted as a transfer or not?
ReplyDeleteHello I was a deferred applicant from early decision and fully intend to do part two being that UGA is my number one choice. How does UGA calculate GPA? What do they give you for the specific grades. For example an A from 90-100 is 4.0. I also know that UGA gives .5 to AP courses. I wanted to knnow the GPA scale such as 80-90,and etc. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCould you please clarify the following 2 requirements as listed in the FAQs for Sophmores:
ReplyDelete1. Have 30-59 semester hours of transferable credit by the application deadline
2. Have completed at least one year of college (post high school) by the term of intended enrollment
Which one applies? I will have completed one year of college before next fall with a total of 36 credits, but 18 of those credits will be taken this coming spring. Does this mean that I am ineligible to apply for next fall semester as the listed deadline for applicants is April 1?
Anon I: We use the GPA scale that your school uses, since your teachers are giving the grades and go on your school's grading scale. So if your school's A is 90-100, then that is a 4.00, etc. That is why we ask you for the grades, and why a grading scale question is on the school evaluation.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: Both of the requirements apply, which is why we list both of them. Since you only meet one of the requirements (you will have been out a year, but we will only have 18 sem. hours of work completed by April 1), you would not be eligible until Spring 2012.
Sorry if I hadn't been completely clear, i mean how you all calculate the uga Gpa for admissions. At my school I have a 3.9. But I wanted to know how to calculate it the way uga would.
ReplyDeleteAnon: The best way to show you how we calculate a freshman GPA is generally by an example, so here goes. You have 5 grades overall, 2 being A's, 2 being B's, and 1 C. UGA only looks at the core courses, so these would fall into the areas of either English, Math, Soc. Sci., Science or For. Lang. courses. As well, one of the B grades is in an AP course.
ReplyDeleteSo for the A grades, both would be worth a 4.0, which totals to 8.0 points (2X4). The B grades are a 3.0 and a 3.5 (.5 added for the AP), so this would total to 6.5 points. The C is worth 2.0 points. Add the points together (8+6.5+2) to equal 16.5 points. Then divide by the number of grades used (5), and your GPA is a 3.30 (16.5/5).
I am guessing your school may use all courses (PE, Art, etc.) for your GPA, while UGA only uses core grades. In addition, many schools will add some weight when calculating the GPA, but UGA is looking at your actual grades on a transcript, not the GPA on it.
My best suggestion is to get a copy of your transcript, calculate the GPA how UGA would do it, and you will then be able to see where you fall in the mid-ranges we mention.
I already submitted my applicaion:)but Im curious if UGA accepts additional information from students if it would strengthen my admission decision! Im afraid that my GPA and my SAT score is kind of weak compared to UGA's average. so I was wondering if UGA takes look at studnets' extra info... for example, video of me singing or dancing which were already mentioned in my application as extracurricular activities. if yes, I want to know if theres anything other than application I can do to strengthen my admission decision ! thank you ! :)
ReplyDeleteRachael: We do accept additional information, but it should be in a format that UGA (or other colleges) can use. For instance, UGA uses an imaging system that for the most part uses documents (like PDF or tiff images), so a video would not be the best thing for this. If you have a link to an online option and give us the URL, that is better, but a video is not a good option.
ReplyDeleteDo you have any update on when Honors auto-admits will be sent?
ReplyDeleteI have 44 hours and a 3.65 GPA looking to transfer into Terry. Do I have a good chance of being accepted as transfer?
ReplyDeleteCurious: Be patient, as Honors needs time to review the admitted students. Only Honors would know when they will be releasing decisions, but I expect it will be soon.
ReplyDeleteVSU: You look like a very strong transfer applicant, and you certainly exceed the consideration level for transfer admission.
Katelyn: If you are a current UGA student, then you should speak with your academic advisor about this. Your advisor would know the date of when registration begins for the summer, and they would also have the list of classes for Maymester.
How strong of an applicant do you think someone with a 3.33 GPA and 39 hours look when transferring into the College of Arts?
ReplyDeleteHello DGraves,
ReplyDeleteWould it be fair to say that every .1 GPA has about the same value as 100 points on the SAT?
Example: 3.5 + 1700 = 3.4 + 1800 ??
Anon: If a transfer applicant meets or exceeds the consideration level for admission, then they are a strong applicant, and they major to which they apply does not have an impact. So, you are a strong transfer applicant.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: First, UGA does not look at the SAT or ACT as one number, but as separate subscores. Second, I have never tried to look at GPA vs the SAT in this way, and so I have no idea.
So does any application over a 3.2 have a strong chance for acceptance?
ReplyDeleteJW: Yes, a transfer applicant with over a 3.20 and over 30 hours (and will have completed one year of college post-HS by the start term) is a strong applicant for admission as a transfer.
ReplyDeleteI am applying to UGA as a transfer student with the intended major of dietetics. (I will have completed 2 years of college by Fall 2011) The website says entrance into this program requires the completion of chemistry and a few other courses I have not gotten the chance to take yet- should I go ahead and put Dietetics on my application or apply as an Undecided major?
ReplyDeleteHeather: For some majors at UGA, you will be applying as an Intended major to these programs, and Dietetics is one of those. Go ahead and select Intended-Dietetics so, if admitted, you can be advised by the College of Family and Consumer Sciences, and they will be able to help guide you towards that major.
ReplyDeleteI am a 2011 spring transfer student. Do i need to have my immunization forms in before i start school in the spring? When is the last date to turn in my final transcripts because my school will have them available by January 3?
ReplyDeleteAnon: You would want to contact the Health Center about this, and early Jan. is fine to get in fall grades, but it will be crazy and may take a few weeks to get in your courses and grades for fall if you get them in at that date.
ReplyDeleteTwo Questions. On the website, it says to transfer in as a junior/senior we need a 2.8. However, you said in a comment in this thread that we only need a 2.6. I was just wondering which is right?
ReplyDeleteAlso I was at an out of state school my freshman year, and received a lot of B+'s. I transferred in state (to GA Southern) and they took out my +'s. Without pluses, I have a 2.75. With them though, I have a 3.0. If the 2.8 is the minimum, do I have a chance of getting in? I know UGA is on the +/- grading system, so I'm assuming the +'s will transfer in. If they do not, is there any way to appeal this?
Sorry for so many questions. Thank you for your time!
Anon: Thank you for catching my error, and I have removed the comment with that mistake. Here is what it should have said:
ReplyDelete"UGA focuses on the transferable work and overall GPA based on all of the transfer work a student has completed by the deadline. If a student has 30-59 transferable semester hours, they need a 3.20 overall GPA for admission consideration. If the student has 60+ transferable semester hours completed, they need a 2.80 overall GPA for consideration.
I would suggest reviewing the transfer page, https://www.admissions.uga.edu/article/admission_information_for_transfer_students.html, for more specific details, as well as the transfer equivalency. The transfer page lists the type of courses we do and do not consider. For instance, one PE hour will transfer, but not the grade, and any repeated course (let's say a 3 hour course) will only count as three transferable hours, but we would use both grades in calculating the GPA.
We need all the transcripts from all the colleges so we can review the specific grades, hours and courses and how they would come into UGA. Do not send in HS transcripts, as we do not use these in the transfer review, and it could slow down the review process by routing your file to a different review by mistake.
In addition, plus/minus grades are converted to the straight letter grade for transfer review."
As for plus/minus grades, as I stated in the end of the message with the error, we convert plus/minus transfer grades to straight letter grades. UGA does use plus/minus in our own system, but there is a wide variety of plus/minus systems and what makes a grade a plus/minus, so generally they do not equal UGA's system. We will need transcripts from both of the schools you have attended, and we will review your file for transfer work, hours and GPA. If you then are denied and wish to appeal, you would want to contact our office.
On the transfer application, on one of the pages it asks to fill out a "transferable credit hours" section. Should I put in the gpa that my school gave me( with plus and minuses), recalculate my gpa myself without the (+/-) or will uga recalculate my gpa automatically? Thankyou!
ReplyDeleteAnon: Either way is fine, as this is just used as a guide for us to see what your estimate is, but we will still calculate your GPA in our office based on the transcripts. If you want to have a better idea of what your GPA will look like at UGA, get a copy of the transcripts of all colleges attended, and then calculate the overall GPA without +/-.
ReplyDeleteI’m a student currently enrolled at a state college. I was wondering if I apply as a transfer student for fall 2010,I have a 3.17 gpa, can I apply as a junior? The reason for my question is because at my institution I’m a junior, but I have some classes that are not transferrable. I also have some foreign language classes that I have taken. Will my CLEP credit be able to be transferred to UGA?
ReplyDeleteCaleb: When we review your application and college transcript, we will determine how many of the classes transfer, and how many total hours transfer. At that time we will determine if you have 60+ hours or not. Foreign language classes transfer into UGA from other institutions, so we will use those in the evaluation. The CLEP work will have to be reviewed separately, as we do not use CLEP directly, but we can see what another college has determined and if we can use that information.
ReplyDeleteDGraves,
ReplyDeleteWhy is the application deadline in May when classes are over in April? I will have enough hours after this semester but it will be past the deadline.
RCamp: I am guessing you mean why is our deadline on April 1 for fall transfers when classes finish up in the middle of May? Here is my standard answer from a number of posts:
ReplyDelete"We have a large number of transfer applicants, so we need time to review them, thus the earlier deadline. In addition, this does allow for us to manage the size of the transfer class."
If we waited until early June for students to get us a transcript, we would not be able to finish making transfer decisions until late July/early August, which does no one any good. As well, we would have no estimate of how many admissible applicants we would have until very late in the cycle, so we would have to set the bar a great deal higher for transfer admission. That is the best that I can give you on this subject.
In your response to "Rachael" on 12/14, you stated that UGA accepts additional info. in PDF form. I am seeking a second degree, and submitted my application today. I have been working since attaining my first degree in 2002. Would you recommend for me to submit my resume also? If so, what email address would I send the PDF to? Thanks.
ReplyDeleteMelissa: The Rachael from above is a freshman applicant (see her mention of the SAT, which is only for freshman), and for freshman applicants, we will look at a wide range of factors. For transfer students, we will only be looking at your college transcripts. It is fine to send in a resume, but for transfer students, it is not a factor in the decision process. Any additional information should be sent to admproc@uga.edu .
ReplyDeleteHi DGraves!
ReplyDeleteI have a few questions:
1. Because some scheduling conflicts wouldn't allow me to take more, by the end of my freshman year I will have 28 completed hours. I plan on taking one or two summer courses at Georgia Gwinnett or another local college, which would get me to 31 or more hours. Though they weren't from the university I am attending now, would they still transfer okay for Spring 2012 if I matched them with courses that UGA accepts?
2. Also (this one may be a bit confusing, I apologize!), I took AP Literature in high school and received a 3 on the exam. UGA accepts a 3 as the English 1101 requirement, but my school only accepted 4 or 5's. Because of this, I was required to take another English class (probably a UGA 1101 equivalency). So at UGA, I would have 3 AP hours, and 3 credit hours from my English class, but I'm not sure if I would get credit for both or just one. Basically what I'm trying to ask is if the English class that I took was a waste of hours towards my transfer application.
I'm so sorry if that was hard to understand! I appreciate any help!!
Hopeful: We are fine with transfer work coming from more than one college, and we have several students who have attended two plus colleges before transferring. I cannot say that the English class you have taken is a waste of time, but generally you would get "credit" for both the AP exam (if sent to UGA) and the class, but you cannot get credit for the same UGA course twice.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering can you apply as a transient student for the summer and and apply as a transfer student in the fall ?
ReplyDeleteCaleb: Transient students are guests at UGA, and must then go back to their home institution for at least one term. This is due both to our student information system and to the fact that we expect guests to be temporary guests, not permanent.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI am trying to transfer for fall 2011 and have completed 16 hours of credit from classes at my school. However, they did not accept many of my ap score. UGA however, would accept enough of my scores to get me up to 35 hours. Only 8 hours of that is listed on my transcript from this college because that is all that they accepted. Since I would need to send my scores to UGA from college board, would those go towards the 30 hours? Thank you.
Travis: The only "transfer" work is work that is on another colleges transcript. Any other credit, be it AP, IB or SAT II, is not considered as transfer credit if it is not on a college transcript. A majority of freshman enter UGA with some form of AP type credit, and it is not considered transfer credit, but test credit. So we only use what is on another college's transcript.
ReplyDeleteI have another question about AP transfer credit:
ReplyDeleteIf I have received credit for all of my AP classes at my current school, would I then look at UGA's AP credit website to figure out how many hours I have, or would I see which CLASSES I have earned credit for through AP's at my current school and then look up those through the transfer equivalency site? In other words, when you say "represented on the transcript" do you mean the AP scores or the classes?
Thanks!
Kaitlin
Kaitlin: When we are looking at transfer work, we are looking at what courses are on a college transcript. So, if you have AP credit, the only way we can use this as transfer credit (for transfer admission purposes) is by looking at what is on the transcript. If the transcript shows AP credit, and then a college course and college course number, and the amount of credit for that class (3 hours for instance), then that is what we would look at for transfer admission. If it just says AP credit 8 hours, we have no idea what course it should come in as or what it actually is.
ReplyDeleteIf your college does not do this, then we will not use the AP work for transfer admission, but you can still have the AP exams sent to UGA for AP credit like freshman applicants do (it just will not be looked at as transfer work, but AP exam work).
What if some of the classes that we receive as credit for AP classes do not transfer to UGA classes?
ReplyDeleteKaitlin
Kaitlin: That is something that you will have to wait for us to review and see how they transfer, and as well check the transfer equivalency. If the courses are not listed, that does not mean they will not transfer, just that we may not have seen them yet in order to review them.
ReplyDeletei'm a student at kennesaw state applying for transfer. i read on this to have work submitted from all colleges, and i just recently remembered doing a dual enrollment class with chat. tech in high school. however, this information isn't on my ksu transcript or anywhere else, and the courses have no transfer equivalency on the uga undergrad admissions page. do i still need to locate this information somehow and have it submitted? or is it irrelevant?
ReplyDeleteDGraves: On the transfer profile from 2009 it states that the average GPA was 3.34, and I assume that number goes up every year. What are the chances of getting in with 30 hours and a 3.2 for summer term.
ReplyDeleteBen
Anon: Yes, you need to get us the transcript, as it may impact HOPE, we need to review it for transfer issues, and it is required.
ReplyDeleteBen: I do not guess about admissions chances, but you are at least in the range for consideration.
I applied back in November for Fall 2011 and sent my new transcript with 44 hours and 3.65 gpa. I still haven't heard back. When do you think I will?
ReplyDeleteUGA Transfer: I think that you need to re-read the post, as I have given you the estimated dates of when we will start reviewing transfers.
ReplyDeleteHello DGraves,
ReplyDeleteWhat are my chances of being accepted this Fall into Franklin(Geography program) as a senior transfer with 94 hours and a 3.83?
Anon: I do not guess about any decisions, freshman or transfer, but you have put yourself in a good position based on your strong work!
ReplyDeleteDGraves,
ReplyDeleteI am interested in obtaining a 2nd undergrad degree at UGA, but my GPA is just under the minimum. I had a meeting with the department I'm interested in and they were very impressed with my work experience and said my GPA wouldn't weigh as heavily for admission to that dept. since I had been out of school for 9 yrs. and that they are more lenient for those pursuing a 2nd degree. But I was dismayed to find out that the university isn't interested in my work experience, only my GPA from 9 yrs. ago. So does this mean UGA won't even consider my application b/c my GPA is slightly below the requirement? Thanks.
Concerned: We will review your application, and then determine a decision based on your academic standing. If you are denied and wish to appeal so the admissions office can look at the extenuating circumstances and your previous work experience, then that is the next step that you can take.
ReplyDeleteIs it true if you complete over half of your school work at another school but finish at UGA you will still receive a UGA diploma
ReplyDeleteAnon: We have a number of students that start at another institution and then transfer into UGA (and receive their degree). I cannot say how each student's previous work would transfer into UGA, or how it would go towards a degree, and at least 45 hours must be completed at UGA.
ReplyDeleteI recently submitted my UGA transfer application for Summer 2011, and wanted to get a rough idea of my chances for acceptance. I started off my freshman year on a bad foot, and ended up doing very poorly - even failing in some classes my first semester. Since then I have done much better. I am a Junior now, and last semester I made a 4.0 GPA in more difficult classes such as organic chemistry and human anatomy & physiology. My GPA by semester goes as follows:
ReplyDelete1.7 (intro classes) - 3 were retaken later
3.0 (intro classes mostly)
3.4 (summer, intro classes)
3.84 (mostly intro classes)
3.46 (bio 1, phys 1, intro)
4.0 (summer, chem1/2)
4.0 (organic, a&p, calc).
I am a chemistry major hoping to pursue biochemistry at UGA. Since becoming a chemistry major I have made all A's. I have also been distinguished as one of the top chemistry students at my school, and have been participating in chemistry based cancer research with faculty for the past academic year.
My overall GPA is a 3.05, however if my first semester were neglected in my GPA, it would be a 3.6. Of the sciences (biology, chemistry, math, physics) classes that count towards my major, I have a 3.77 GPA.
Sorry if this is far too detailed, but I am really worried about my freshman year and how it may impact my transfer application.
My main questions to you are, is an uphill trend in grades favorable for admission? or is general GPA more important? Also, since I am coming in hoping to be a biochemistry major, will my sciences GPA be weighted more? I am the type of person who does not do great in "survey" or liberal arts curriculum type classes, but is in the top of my class in the sciences. Does UGA see many students of this type? And how favorable/disfavorable can this be?
Joey: When UGA reviews files for transfer admission, our focus is on your overall grades and hours, so if you have 60+ hours (I would assume you do) and a 3.05, then you have a strong chance for admission to UGA. We will have to do our review of your work and determine a GPA and transfer hours, but you are above the 2.80 GPA consideration level for juniors, so you are a strong candidate for transfer admission.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the response, DGraves. I should have mentioned that as a freshman I ended up with disciplinary action for consumption of alcohol as a minor two times, which was in part why my grades suffered. Since the time of my freshman year I have changed completely and am not the same person I once was. However, I am considered on disciplinary probation for the entirety of my stay at Georgia College. Even though this is something that has clearly been put in my past, and will remain there, how much of an impact will it play in my admissions decision?
ReplyDeleteJoey: Hopefully, you wrote this in your application in detail, as well as what you are like now. If this is all, then it should not cause a serious problem, especially if you have had no further problems and have now changed your actions.
ReplyDeleteI did not go into deep detail, though I did say that I had undergone disciplinary action for consumption of alcohol as a minor and that I have since changed. Since disciplinary records are obviously going to be looked at, I did not expect to have to elaborate to a great extent. Would it be worth talking to someone more in detail about the trouble I ended up in?
ReplyDeleteJoey: I would suggest sending an email to admproc@uga.edu that goes into a little more detail, but it does not need to be overdone.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good, thank you for your help.
ReplyDelete
