Happy Holidays everyone, and I hope you are enjoying (or about to start enjoying) your holiday break. Our office is still open this week, but we will be shutting down late Friday, and we do not return until January 4. As such, our office will not be opening mail, responding to email, available on the phone, etc. during this time. This means that any material that comes into our office, whether online or by the mail, will not generally be updated until January 4 and beyond. So do not sit by your computer, checking your myStatus to see if that teacher recommendation has arrived, and please be patient with us during early January, as life gets very busy about that time. We have about 1,000 new students who will start in the Spring term, and we need to make sure they are prepared for orientation, signing up for classes, etc.
As well, we will be receiving a huge volume of materials over the next four weeks or so, as the January 15 deadline is quickly approaching. Please remember, treat a deadline not something to shoot for, but as a date by which you should have everything in to UGA. We will accept applications at midnight on the deadline, but if you choose to do this, you are putting yourself in a bad position about being able to make sure everything is in at UGA. In the same thought process, do not wait until the end to ask your counselor or teacher to submit their materials, as they will not be happy you procrastinated, their letters may be rushed, etc. Talk to them early, and give them time to get things in to UGA.
As for materials showing up at UGA, please make sure that your teacher/school uses your official name (so far today I have seen a school use a nickname on their transcript, and another teacher accidentally put in her own name as the student name in the form. In addition, please be patient as we match up materials, especially if your items were sent in the mail. If you do not see an item indicated as received by UGA, make sure to give us about 8-10 business days to process it (holiday days do not count), and then check with the counselor/teacher to make sure it was sent. Please note that when we receive a packet of materials for a student, we separate it into the type of material (transcript, counselor evaluation, etc., to more quickly scan and classify the documents. In other words, we can quickly scan in 500 high school transcripts and name them all "High School Transcript" very quickly, but this sometimes means that there may be a day or two difference when one item appears on myStatus vs. another.
Lastly, please remind your school NOT to fax any materials, and that staples are the bane of any scanning/imaging system.
Have a great holiday break, cheer on the UGA football team as they play in the Liberty Bowl, and Go Dawgs!
All: I have had several questions about when application materials need to be in, what happens if they are not in, etc. UGA Admissions works hard to complete a student's file, and we will work with students if things come in a little late. For paper documents, our deadlines are postmark deadlines, and we will keep the online school forms open after the deadline. This does not mean that a student should do things after the deadline though! Make sure you speak with your counselor and teacher early about getting in materials, and give them time to do their work! And if you choose to apply on the deadline, please understand that we will take you application, but you are setting yourself up to possibly have problems by not giving yourself any leeway with required materials. Do yourself a favor and take care of things before the deadline!
ReplyDeleteCan I send in my college transcript for the classes I took last semester?(I'm still in high school) The reason I ask is because my grades from the college want be transferred to the high school by the deadline.
ReplyDeleteAnon: We are fine if you want to send in your dual enrollment transcript, and we will add it to your file and it will show up on myStatus when we receipt it.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI know you cannot speak for the honors program but I was wondering what you think are going to be the main things looked at? Will they look at co-curricular and extra-curricular activities along with the grades?
Thank you
Anon: I do not guess about things, so I will not start with guessing how Honors will make their decisions. The Honors application asks for a great deal of information about both academic and personal details, and I am sure they will use it all.
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI am an incoming transfer student for the 2011 spring semester. I am completing my required forms for new students needed by The University Health Center.
This is the specific page I am working on:
http://www.uhs.uga.edu/appts_forms/open_comm.html
I am currently unable to access the "online health history" page. The message I get is "The server encountered an internal error. Please close your browser and try again later. If this problem persists, please contact the system administrator."
Do you know when this page will become available? I was able to view it the other day. I do not want it to deter me from beginning classes in January.
Thank you.
Anon: I would suggest contacting the Health Center, as I do not have access to their system. I was able to get into the online health history page, https://parrot.uhs.uga.edu/opencommunicator/login_directory.aspx, when I tried, so it may be that it was down for just a short while.
ReplyDeleteIf you are still having issues, just contact the Health Center.
And that comment was for Andrew, not Anonymous.
ReplyDeleteOk, thank you very much. I appreciate it. I am still getting the same error message, so I will go ahead and contact the Health Center.
ReplyDeletehello
ReplyDeleteis it okay for a teacher to do recommendation online and send a mail(letter written about a student) to admission's office ?
Anon: We would not want that, as it duplicates our effort for the same information. Either the teacher should send a recommendation online (there is a space for a detailed letter) or send it by mail, but do not make us do the same work twice please.
ReplyDeletehi. i am a senior in high school and i was accepted into UGA Early admissions. i recently received the Charter scholarship award and i was wondering if it could possibly get revoked if i fall short of my grades during senior year, given that I do not get revoked from admissions into UGA. Also, is it true that the top 5% of admissions automatically get placed into UGA Honors without application necessary?
ReplyDeleteThank you
Jason: UGA will be reviewing your senior grades, and if there is a major dip, then we could revoke a scholarship and/or admission. I say a major dip, not a drop from A's to A's and B's, or a C in your file grades. I am more talking about a big drop where we are seeing a majority C grades, or D/F grades scattered in, etc.
ReplyDeleteAs for Honors, I do not have any exact information about their selection process and numbers, but I expect that they will be releasing information shortly about their first round of decisions (without having to fill out their application), as well as other communications from Honors to EA accepted students.
I hope this helps.
I submitted my application already but the transcript I sent didn't include my grades from the college classes I took this semester. I was wondering if my school counselor can just send my transcript via email.
ReplyDeleteMae: I would suggest that you contact the college where you did dual enrollment courses and have them send in a transcript instead. If you enroll at UGA, we will need it to post the credit, and having the actual college transcript shows the specific course and grade, where the HS transcript does not always show this when the courses are translated to high school work.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was accepted in early admissions. We were hoping for an out of state tuition waiver. Have those awards all been distributed or could she still receive one?
ReplyDeleteAnon: We will be making scholarship decisions (along with out-of-state waivers) through mid-April as we review files and finish receiving applications. We have awarded a small number of scholarships at this time, but we are still a long way from completing this process.
ReplyDeleteThanks. This has been a great blog!
ReplyDeletewasn't sure where I should ask this, but I have a question about housing. I'm not really looking forward to living on Ramen and Easy Mac for a year and I like cooking my own food, so is it better to register for an apartment with a kitchen or do the halls all have common kitchens? Do you bring your own pots and pans? I know they are equipped with microwaves, but what about fridges? Stoves? Do freshmen even have a chance of getting an apartment? The housing brochure says it is mixed. And as I don't have a car, are there any super markets within walking distance? Is the cafeteria food good enough that I should just apply for a suite? Would you be biased in answering that? (Just kidding!)
ReplyDeleteSorry for all the questions! Have a great New Year!
Anon: For freshmen, I seriously, heavily, emphatically suggest you go with the meal plan. That is a better option than any other for eating that first year. As for housing options and amenities, I would suggest speaking with the Housing office, but the best option is the meal plan. While there are different opinions on a lot of things at UGA, the overwhelming consensus on campus is that the meal plan is great.
ReplyDeleteSince you mentioned how wonderful the meal plan is, do you know if they are able and willing to work with students that have food allergies? Some cafeteria staffs are willing to help and others are not.
ReplyDeleteAlso, thanks for your comments on being pressured to accept scholarships by early deadlines. You have been so helpful with all aspects of college applications. Hope that you are having a wonderful break and that you have the best of New Years!
A mother: The UGA Food Services Department has a dietitian who will work with students with food allergies (along with other issues), and this person's contact information can be found at http://www.uga.edu/foodservice/nutrition/dietitian.html. I would also suggest reviewing their entire site for other details about the meal plan at UGA.
ReplyDeleteP.S.: I am glad that this site has helped, and Happy (belated) New Year to everyone!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for this wonderful blog! It has been a great help to us. I have a question about teacher recommendations. I think you have addressed this but I can't find it! My daughter's academic teacher has already submitted her online recommendation. We would like to ask a non-academic teacher for another recommendation. Would it be better for this second rec. to be submitted on-line or as a mailed letter? Thank you for your time and patience!
ReplyDeleteMM: I would suggest that teachers submit a recommendation online through our website (although it is fine to come in by mail). The reason is that over the next 20 days or so, we will be getting thousands upon thousands of documents mailed to us (recommendations, transcripts, etc.), and we have to open them, scan them, classify them, drop them into student's files, etc. If things come in online, they are able to flow into the student's file much easier and quicker, and with less busy work by the admissions team.
ReplyDeleteMM: Just make sure the teacher uses your daughter's full name and birthdate (and if possible, her SSN).
ReplyDeleteMy student is on medication that has to be refrigerated and is shipped every two weeks from an out of state pharmacy. Would the on campus mailroom be able to accommodate for this type of overnight shipment? A fridge in the dorm room will be fine for keeping it at an appropriate temperature once it has been delivered.
ReplyDeleteAnon: This one is a little to far out of my realm for comfort. I would first suggest contacting the UGA Health Center, email is lrachun@uhs.uga.edu, as they may have seen this before and know the answer. If not, they would be able to direct you to the right person.
ReplyDeleteThe teacher I chose to write my recommendation got an e-mail on December 14th stating that it was received, yet it is still not showing up in my file. I am assuming I should have it sent again. Should it be sent again through the online form or by e-mail attachment?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Either way is fine, but make sure that is has your correct official name, birthdate, etc. If the letter has a different name (Trey instead of Jonathan), it is not easy for us to match it up. As well, if she used a SSN and did not put in the correct one, it will not match up.
