Admissions - After the EA Decisions are Out

Now that Early Action decisions have been made, here are a few items of note of what will be going on over the next few weeks in Admissions:

Starting today (Monday, 12/6), we will begin to enter in the materials that came in late for EA applicants, and the materials that we could not load in late last week for RD applicants due to the volume of decisions that had to go out. Please be patient as we enter in this data, and know that we will get materials in ASAP.

On Wednesday (12/8), we will begin to load in SAT and ACT scores that we have been holding since just after the third week in Nov., when we had to halt the import of test scores in order to make EA admission decisions. Please be patient, as it takes a little while to get these into the system (there are a number score uploads with only a handful of scores each, so it takes more time to do it).

Later this week, we will also get back to looking at RD applicants and double checking their transcripts against their self-reported grades, and making sure everything is okay with their files.

Next week and the week folllowing, our office will begin to get in Fall semester college grades for students, both for Spring enrolling freshmen and transfers, and as well Summer/Fall transfers. Please bear with us on this, as they all seem to come at once and it takes a while to wade through them.

And for the freshman who have or will apply to UGA through GA411, then you would have received (or will receive) an email (sent to the email on the GA411 app) the day after we pushed your application into our system. It would have given you a method to gain access to our myStatus page, and it would have given you a link to confirm your situation. If your email client pushed this email to Spam, or if you did not confirm the myStatus connection, then you would not have been able to then connect to your myStatus account. Please make sure that you have uga.edu emails on your email white list (allowable emails), and review the email account you gave us on your application. Hopefully our tech dept. has taken care of the few GA411 applicants who had trouble accessing their myStatus page, and that this will not be a problem in the future.

Thank you for all your comments, and I hope I was able to answer a majority of your questions.

Go Dawgs!

  1. For deffered students, do we need two teacher recommendations or just one?

  2. I got accepted early and I am really worried my acceptance will be revoked because I have a high C in both of my AP Classes...will be acceptance be revoked because of these two C's? I promise I will try harder next semester. This semester has just been crazy with ACT and SAT and college apps

    ReplyDelete
  3. Anon: We suggest one teacher rec., but if you feel the need, we will be fine with two.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Ryan: Generally, we would not revoke an acceptance due to 1 or 2 C grades, but you need to make sure you keep up your other grades, and that you do well in your Spring term.

  5. Hi DGraves, I'm in a situation similar to Ryan's, above. I got in EA and I'll most likely have a high C in my dual enrollment college calculus class, but all of my other grades are A's, and I'm sure that next semester will be all A's. This is my first EVER C, and I've made only 4 B's in all of high school, so would this affect my acceptance? Sorry if this is redundant, I've just been worrying. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  6. FutureDawg: As you can see from the answer to Ryan, I would not worry about this, as long as you keep up strong grades in your other classes and in the spring. Good luck and congratulations on your acceptance!

  7. Thanks DGraves for answering so quickly! That makes me feel a lot better. Go Dawgs! Can't wait for next fall :)

  8. Will it make a difference if I get a teacher rec. from an AP teacher or is an honors teacher fine?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anon: We will not care if it is an AP or an Honors teacher, as we would rather have one from a teacher that can tell us about you, your academic habits, and how you are in their classroom.

    ReplyDelete
  10. If you have an sat score of around 2000, you probably won't be denied at the end right? As long your other stats are decent and no red flags?

    ReplyDelete
  11. mhmm: I have no idea, as it depends on what a person's definition of decent is. As I have said repeatedly, UGA puts more focus on grades and rigor than SAT, so I would personally not put all your eggs in that one basket called the SAT.

  12. hello how are you doing today :)

  13. Thanks for all your great advices regarding admission. I now have a question regarding the registration site for housing. I have created UGA MyID and then tried to get into the site for housing registration online as recommended, but I cannot get into that site. Is this a problem that others are dealing with due to high volume? Thank you. HS

    ReplyDelete
  14. GArocks: Doing fine, glad that you think GA rocks.

HS: Housing is using a new system this year for registration, and they had plans to have it up on Friday. Due to some tech. difficulties, there are still a few issues, and I am guessing it is not up yet. It is not due to high volume, but instead has to do with the new system. I would suggest contacting housing.

  15. let me give you a sinereo here
lets say this friend of mine came to US about 9 months ago and her GPA is all crazzy halloo woo
whould you take the 9 month foreign in account during the addmitionn??

    ReplyDelete
  16. and you posted ur coment at 11:11 ooo haha

    ReplyDelete
  17. GArocks: First, before you make a comment, please make sure that both I can read it accurately and it conveys the real question you want to ask. I am guessing that you are asking if we will take into account that she only arrived in the US about 9 months ago. During our holistic read process, we would take this into account in the overall review of her situation. In addition, we would look at all of her transcripts to try and come up with the most accurate interpretation of her grades, both in the US and abroad. I hope this helps.

  18. thanks and sorry about that

  19. Our county is offering the SAT again on Jan. 22nd, will this be too late to take the test?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Concerned Mom: We will be able to take the Jan. SAT, but that will be the last SAT or ACT we will be able to accept, and the student has to request the test be sent to UGA when signing up for the exam. The admissions application calendar states Dec. as the last month, but over the last few years, the SAT has done a great job of getting the results to us in record time, so the Jan. test date will be fine.

  21. If I decide to mail in my teacher rec, do you recommend me telling the teacher to fill in form on computer or by pen? I wouldn't ask but my computer won't let me save data entered, so I would have to tell my teacher what to enter on To The Applicant section. But if I fill it out and let him write it, I'm afraid you guys won't be able to read his handwriting haha.

    ReplyDelete
  22. When I can I expect my acceptance packet? I am anxious to confirm my enrollment and secure the dorm I want.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Anon: The online teacher form allows for the teacher to do everything, and you do not need to fill out any of it. But we are also fine if he does the rec. on paper (and I have had to deal with a lot of handwriting issues, so do not worry).

Thomas: Some of the packets were mailed out on Friday, and some on Monday (6,100+ envelopes is a lot), so just be patient. As well, if you are looking at signing up for housing, you first should go online to uga.edu and search for MyID (the first thing you should do). Housing is having a few issues with it's new site, so be patient and know that you will be fine.

  24. HI, I'm a senior with decent grades about an 83% it would be higher but my junior year was tough. I believe my SAT scores are good I have a 1230 but I know GPA is strongly considered at your school. I am doing considerably better this year and I've been very devoted to my extra curriculars. I'm just concerned that my grades will be the first and last thing admissions will see. I'm doing regular decision if that changes anything. I REALLY like UGA I'm just wondering if grades will ruin my chances.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Anon: Your grades are the first academic area that we look at, but not the only thing. I have no idea about your chances, but having low grades does mean that you will have a steeper mountain to climb in our review of your file. My suggestion is to review your transcript and look at your core grades, and convert just the core grades to a 4.0 scale (A is 4, B is 3, etc.). As well, we do look at a student's progress, at the rigor of your schedule, and at a wide range of factors during our read process. I would make sure to get in a transcript with fall grades, as if you are improving, this will be important.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Thanks for the quick response. I will calculate my grades but if I'm taking all IB classes is the weight considered? What other things could I use to my advantage if my "GPA" is not all A's.

    ReplyDelete
  27. GoGA: We add .5 for every AP or IB grade, so you would add this to the review. The other things depend on your situation. Be honest with us about your strengths and weaknesses, and give us an idea of why you would be a strong student and person on the UGA campus. Tell us about your activities and leadership roles, and do not try and cover up any limitations (we are looking at everything anyway, so just be upfront if there are any low grades, etc.).

  28. The teacher fills everything out? Because I saw that there is a To the Applicant section that reacquired my SSN.

    ReplyDelete
  29. My friend is in a similar situation. He didnt come to the us till he was like 11. Should i recommend him listing this in additional info, because he says he's afraid that he will seem like a person that always makes excuses

    ReplyDelete
  30. Anon: Let me be more precise about the teacher rec. For the online form, the teacher does everything. For the paper version, you can fill out the student info.

idunno: If your friend has an unusual circumstance, they should let us know about it. We ask for information under "special circumstances" so they should let us know.

  31. Do you know if the "auto admit" honors acceptances have gone out yet? Will they simultaneously send the invitations to those who may qualify but weren't in the top 2%?

    ReplyDelete
  32. nextstep: Honors has not released their decisions, but I expect they will within 1-2 weeks, so be patient. I am not sure where the idea of the "top 2%" has come about, as I believe that is somewhat of a myth. They will make initial decisions, and also communicate with students that they believe are strong enough that they then encourage to apply to Honors.

    ReplyDelete
  33. This summer at the onsite Honors Information Session held at Moore College we were told the top 2-3% were auto-admitted.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Can you have recommendations that are not from teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In relation to an earlier question, you mentioned that the admissions staff suggests one teacher recommendation, but will be fine with two. Would you mind explaining, please? Would submitting two recommendations be looked down upon, or just unnecessary? Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I ask about the honors decision because I'd like to work on my essay over break if I'm not auto-admitted. Also, if we applied for Foundation Fellow should we submit recommendations again for Honors application? Thanks for all your good info and advise!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Boatfoot: Thanks for the information, as I did not know this.

Anon: We are fine with one non-teacher rec, but please no more than that.

JWL: An additional recommendation letter will not be frowned upon, but I do not suddenly want to double the number of letters coming in to our office just because a student feels like they need 2+ teacher recs. If you feel like two different teachers can share two different sides of you, then that is fine. But if both the teacher recs say the exact same thing, then we do not need to be told this twice. Again, a second one will not be seen as a negative. What I am trying to avoid is an overflow of recs just to have recs in a student's file.

  38. Uga Has been my top school. My gpa is 3.5 weighted and my SAT is 1210 (math and reading) currently. I realize that my GPA is below the average of your 50% percentile but my SAT score is in the range. Am I a competitive applicant for regular decision if I have strong essays, strong teacher recs, and good, high grades this semester of my senior year?

    Thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Do you have any idea on a date when the invitation letters for FF/Bernard Ramsey Scholarship finalists will be mailed in January? Will you receive a letter indicating if you are not a finalist? If so, are you automatically considered for the Presidential Scholarship? I have not applied for the honors program, because just getting accepted EA seemed so competitive I was mostly worried about that. I don't believe I need to be in the honors program to be considered for a scholarship... but want to make sure I am correct.

    Thank you,

    Anonymous Bulldog

    ReplyDelete
  40. Rachael: I am glad to see that your grades are solid and on the rise, and hopefully you have followed our suggestion to challenge yourself in your course selection. I am guessing that you are competitive, but everything will depend on how many competitive applicants their are in the overall pool of applicants.

Anon bulldog: I do not have a date for the FF/Ramsey information to be sent out, but all applicants will receive a communication. As a whole, all admitted students are considered for the Presidential Scholarship. Any Honors questions should go to Honors, though.

  41. I have already been accepted into UGA. I will have taken 11 honor courses and i have completed 4 APs. I am scheduled to take two APs next semester but only plan on taking one of the exams. If i switched one of my APs to an elective would my decision be revoked???

I also have a 3.8 Core GPA and a 1240 on math+reading and a 590 on writing if this factors.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Anon: If an applicant has major changes to their schedule of core classes, then I would suggest they email admproc@uga.edu to let us know of the exact change, and why the change is being made. It is generally not a problem, but if there are drastic changes that impact a student's rigor, then we need to review the situation.

    ReplyDelete
  43. What if the course is AP Latin which is not required?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Anon: AP Latin is still a core class, so I would suggest emailing our office with the details and explanation.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Does the rigor of your classess give flexibility when looking at GPA? for example if I have a 3.7 and 7 AP classes how would I compare academically to someone with a 4.0 and 1 or 2 AP classes?

    ReplyDelete
  46. Anon: We look at the combination of grades and rigor when reviewing a file. While I do not suggest that a student look at rigor just based on the number of AP courses taken, and I could not compare two students, we are certainly looking at the rigor when reviewing a student.

  47. still cant see my ACT scores on the myStatus and i took them in october..
should i just be patient or is there a problem locating my information?

    ReplyDelete
  48. what determines the rigor of a class?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Do you know if a student goes standby on the ACT (tomorrow), if the scores will be sent to UGA in time for the January 15th deadline?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Anon I: I would suggest you look at your score report to make sure of the name and SSN on the report, as well as the area that shows what colleges it was sent to. If the name and SSN are different than your app, send us an email about it.

Anon II: The admission office looks at what is offered at your school and in your community as far as courses and what you then have taken.

Anon III: I would check with the ACT about that, but we will be taking the Jan SAT, so if it can get in by the end of Jan, you should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  51. the name and ssn are all the same..act confirmed that it was sent nov. 17th..still not there, what email should i contact?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Anon: Send an emial to admproc@uga.edu with details so we can fix the issue.

  53. hello. On my application I said I would be taking AP economics. However after thinking about it, I decided I don't want to take 5 AP courses second semester of senior year (i'm taking AP Lit, Cal AB, Physics B, and Psych). Should I notify the admissions that i'm taking onlevel econ instead? Thanks. I was accepted early, by the way.

    ReplyDelete
  54. ^ those all were AP courses
ap lit, ap cal ab, ap physics B, and AP psych.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Anon: I would suggest emailing this information to admproc@uga.edu just so we can put this into your file, but it should not have a negative impact due to the strength of your other senior classes.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My teacher is having problems sending in her recommendation for me. She filled out all the required fields and tried sending it three times, but the page always reloaded without saying it was successfully sent. Will she have to redo it another time, or will it already have been received?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Anon: I could not guess as to if it went through or not, as I do not know the details of the situation. I would suggest that you wait a few days to see if it went through (myStatus page), and then tell her to send it as an attachment to admproc@uga.edu if it does not go through.

    ReplyDelete
  58. where should my teacher go on the website to fill out the teacher recomendation ?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Anon: You can direct the teacher to https://www.admissions.uga.edu/teacherrec.html, or you can send them the pdf link of https://www.admissions.uga.edu/teacherrec.html, or they can just send in a letter of rec with your full name on it (I hate it when we get a letter recommending Sarah, but never mention her last name).

    ReplyDelete
  60. How long will the teacher recommendation page be unavailable?

    ReplyDelete
  61. Anon: The whole site was down for a few hours this morning due to a server change, but it should all be up now. If the teacher rec is still down, we will fix it soon.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Do you know if the Honors Program auto-admit decisions have been mailed out yet? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  63. I am applying for regular decision and was wondering if it is required to fill out the "second intended major" part

    ReplyDelete
  64. I was wondering if out-of-state applicants have to mail in ACT scores even if they sent SAT scores already. And on the application, under course work, should we list our electives like ceramics, etc.?

    ReplyDelete
  65. EA Admit: I do not know Honors schedule for sending out decisions, but I would suggest being patient, at least for another week or so.

Anon: We would like you to fill out all sections, as it gives us a better idea of who you are.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Confused: We only need either an ACT (with Writing) or an SAT score, but it will not hurt you to send in both. If you can fit in your non-core classes, please do.
