I expect that we will begin reviewing transfer files in depth in late January, and we will continue through late April/early May. The main thing that transfer students need to do now is to move forward with applying and in getting all your transcripts in to UGA. As well, if you have already sent in a transcript from your current college, you now need to send an updated transcript with Fall 2010 work when it is available.
The application process for transfer students is a lot less complicated than for freshman, but we still have students who are incomplete. Apply (and submit your application fee) and list every college attended on the application, and send in transcripts from every college ever attended (even if it is from your high school days and dual enrollment). If we do not have a transcript from every college you have attended, we cannot review your file.
So transfers, make sure we have all your transcripts in, and Go Dawgs!

ReplyDeleteI was one of the lucky few to find out I was accepted as a transfer student for summer. I'm so excited.
This blog has been a tremendous help, and I'm so thankful for it.
I did however have a couple questions. One, do I still need to submit my fall 2010 transcript when this semester ends, or is it ok to just submit one transcript when I finish this next semester, Spring 2011?
Second, although I don't think it will be a problem, I just wanted to make sure I understand this stipulation. Now that I have been accepted, is it true that as long as my GPA doesn't fall below the minimum requirement of a 2.8 for 60 hours or more that I'll still be eligible to attend for Summer 2011?

Nicholas: I would suggest you send in a fall term transcript in January so we can post the work in our system, and then send another one after Spring. This will allow for us to be further along in how your work applies to a UGA degree.

ReplyDeleteI was wondering if UGA offers an extended application due date for agriculture majors wishing to enroll in the college? By extended, I am wondering if you would take the transcript from a freshmen fall and spring semesters and review them for admission into the next fall semester.
Anon: No, UGA does not have an extended application date for Agriculture majors. We tried this for a few colleges several years ago (Ag. and Forestry), but a number of students took advantage of the situation and applied as one of these majors, then after admission, they flipped to another major almost immediately.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest that anyone wanting to major in a program under the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences or the Warnell School of Forestry should speak with the college about the majors, and about other opportunities.

ReplyDeleteI am aware this is not the blog's topic, but I was wondering if UGA is aware of certain high-schools' rigor, for example a considerably tough private school that is known in the county to be more challenging than a nearby public school, and whether or not this is considered in the application process. Also, if a student has challenged his or herself by taking two math classes or two sciences in one year multiple times as opposed to taking an AP, will this be considered a rigorous curriculum at all? Thank you so much, I truly appreciate your blog.
Dawg 2011: UGA tracks the students from each high school, and how they do when they attend UGA. I would not specifically focus on private vs. public high schools, as I have seen both strong private and public schools, and some of both that are not as strong.
ReplyDeleteAs well, though, we focus on the students themselves, as sometimes at a high school that has limitations, the students have to put in extra effort just to make it make it through, and sometimes a student at a well known school tries to slide by on the strength of their high school.
As for challenge, we look at what a student takes compared to what is offered, and we do notice when a student doubles up in one area.
I am a parent of an accepted spring 2011 transfer student who was very excited to get accepted into UGA. However, he now realizes that he will need to reapply for fall 2011 because he has a heavy course load at Kennesaw this spring and wanted to finish with strong grades by keeping the teachers and classes he had there. So we are going to reapply to UGA for fall and my question is, do you think he will still have a strong a chance of being accepted after not attending this spring? One other thing...he has kept his grades up very well this semester too. Thank you in advance for your help and answer!
ReplyDeleteAnon: We will not base his decision on his being admitted before, or that he decided not to attend for the Spring. We will base his decisions on his academic standing, and we will need fall 2010 grades for the review. If he still has the strong (or stronger) transfer grades that allowed him to be admitted for the Spring, then I expect that he will have a strong chance of admission in the Fall.
ReplyDeleteHi, I am applying as a transfer student for Fall 2011. I am a Sophomore at another college currently. My intended major is Accounting, and I realize I have to be admitted to the Terry College of Business in order to continue this major at UGA. I know I can't apply to Terry until I am enrolled at UGA. I'm not quite sure what I would do in the semester before I am able to be admitted into Terry (Fall 2011), however. Do you know anything about students transferring as a junior who intend to major in a Terry major? My core curriculum will be finished by the time I get to UGA assuming I am accepted.
ReplyDeleteBR: First, you would apply with an intended major of Pre-Business/Accounting. Second, you would speak with an advisor within Accounting, and they would give you suggestions on what to take after seeing your schedule, and you would go to http://bulletin.uga.edu/ to locate the major information and the contact person. That is the best advice at this time.

ReplyDeletetransfer until at least the second semester of her sophmore year. She will have 33 credits at the end of this year, but it says you have to have 30 by the April first application deadline. Can you please clarify?
Anon: What you are reading is correct. Your daughter will need to apply for Spring of 2012, as she will not have 30 completed hours by the April 1 deadline. If there are extenuating circumstances (family illness that requires her to be closer to home, etc.), you can speak to one of our counselors about the situation, but realistically she would be looking at transferring in for Spring 2012.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the quick response and I apologize in advance if you don't know the answer to this as I realize it may not be your area of expertise, but I had one more question regarding transferring with intent to major within the Terry College of Business. Since I would be entering UGA as a Junior with the core curriculum finished, will I be unable to take any upper level Accounting courses until I am admitted to Terry (which would presumably be Spring 2012). I'm a little concerned about that as it would kind of throw off the timeline of some things and possibly push me a semester behind schedule. Thanks for the clear, quick responses to all of our questions.
ReplyDeleteMy daughter has been diligently working at the local community college to earn 30 hours by the end of this semester so that she can apply to UGA as a transfer student for Fall 2011 as a sophomore. She is on her way to having a 4.0 cumulative gpa. We have heard that it is easier to be accepted to UGA with an uncommon major, though her declared major is Biology. Will this decrease her chances of being accepted with a major this common? Thank you for your help.

ReplyDeleteKathy: No, it is not easier to be admitted to UGA with an uncommon major, as students can change their majors at varying times of the enrollment process without any impact. Being a Biology major will not have an impact on her decision.

Also I am anticipating around a 3.0 GPA looking to apply to Terry College of Business (management major). I am aware that Terry is hard to get into, do yo have any suggestions if I were to be accepted as a Junior transfer but not able to enroll in the College of Business? Thank you
Anon: We have a transfer admission session every Friday at 1, and the people there will try to help you in understanding the transfer admission process. In addition, they will help connect you to an advisor in Terry.

ReplyDeleteOn Oct. 27, 2010 I submitted my application to transfer for summer 2011 and unfortunately I was not one of the lucky ones to hear back regarding their decision. If accepted into UGA I will also be applying to the Online Spec Educ program, so my question is: Will UGA be making any further decisions anytime soon or should I expect to wait until late January for a decision?

Anon: I am guessing we will be able to review some files starting in late January (through late April), and you will want to make sure you get your Fall grades in as soon as possible after they are available. Summer transfers will be first in line in our transfer review, so you should be in the earlier stages of the process.

ReplyDeleteAlthough I have been deferred EA at this time, I am still remaining positive about RD and have almost completed part II! Hopefully I will be offered Fall 2011 admission, but if not, I have a question about transferring. I am a full time dual-enrollment student at KSU and will have completed 25 credit hours by the end of Spring 2011. If I enroll full time at KSU and take two summer classes, ending up with 31 credit hours by Fall 2011, could I apply to UGA as a transfer student for Spring 2012? Thanks!
Meg: First, I would say let's focus on part II, going through the read process, etc. Made sure you have a KSU transcript sent to us after first sem. grades are done so that we can see your progression in courses, and the specific grades in your dual enrollment classes.
ReplyDeleteIf you are not admitted as a freshman, the requirements are to be out of HS for a year, and to have 30+ hours. So the first time you could start as a transfer at UGA would be the summer/fall of 2012. As well, you want to make sure you keep your grades up while at KSU to make sure you meet the transfer consideration criteria. I hope this clears things up.

ReplyDeleteI am attempting to apply for Summer 2011 admission as a transfer student however there is no where to start a new application after I sign in, I can only review my previous application status. I e-mailed the uga tech support but haven't heard back yet. Any advice on how to rectify this issue would be greatly appreciated.
Anon: First, be patient. If you have emailed adm-tech, then give them at least 5 business days to get back with you. If they do not respond in that timeframe, email them again with the details.
ReplyDeleteI am wanting to transfer for Fall 2011. I will have the 30 credit hours required but my GPA will be at 3.1. Can you tell me if the GPA will keep me from being considered for transfer. I received a C in a core elective. Do you weigh the core elective different?
ReplyDeleteAnon: The minimum level for consideration for a transfer applicant with 30-59 hours is a 3.20, so this will be a sticking point, and we do not weigh core elective classes differently.
