Thomas Edison and the Contact ID

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
                                                     Thomas Edison

In our testing of the Contact ID system and the application, we have found that while it works well in production, at this time the system is not able to handle the amount of traffic we project will occur over the application timeline. We have tried to make adjustments to the server load (tech talk if you are not sure of this term), as well as other features of the system, but we did not feel comfortable that you, the applicants, would be able to go through the application process without possibly having some connectivity issues.

As such, we will be using an updated version of our system from last year's application process (along with an in-office created contact page), and we will look at instituting the campus based Contact ID system in a future application cycle. Our goal is to always make the application process run smoothly for you, the applicant. The application process will move forward as before, and the Status page will include some new features this year.

We apologize for the inconvenience that this has caused, but we hope to have our application process up and running shortly, and we hope you will be happy with the new features that will roll out in this year's status page.

Just because something doesn't do what you planned it to do doesn't mean it's useless.

  1. So, does this mean we should disregard the email regarding the creation the contactID for transfer admissions in the spring?

    Thanks!!

  2. Clarke: Yes, at this point you should disregard the email about creating a Contact ID, as we will be going in a different direction (this involved the transfer applicants who had already applied to UGA for Spring). If you already created a Contact ID, we will try to convert this to the new system. We will be communicating with people after we have the new system up and running, and I expect it will be earlier than predicted.

  4. Anon: Generally, we hold the application open for a little while after the deadline already to help with students that wait until the last moment to apply and have issues. Since I expect the application will be up very soon, I would not expect that you will have any problem applying before the deadline, but if you do, you should contact our office to discuss the issue. Generally, the transfer application does not take very long to complete. In addition, the best thing to do right now is contact your previous college(s) and make sure to have all your transcripts sent in to UGA. Generally, that is more of an issue with transfer applicants that the application, as some applicants wait until the deadline to request their transcripts, and college transcripts sometimes take a while to be sent out.

  5. my college allows me to pick up my transcripts rather than letting them send them. Can i send my own transcripts or does the school have to?

  6. I submitted my application this morning under my contact ID but did not pay the fee or mail the transcript. Will my application be deleted or will I still be able to access it after all of the changes are made and the application is back up?

  7. Anon I: As long as the transcript(s) you bring in to our office are official and sealed, then it is not a problem.

Anon II: At this point, I cannot say what the situation is with your application, as a part of submitting the application is completing the payment page (either by credit card or marking that you will be sending in a check), and I am not sure if you have done that or not. As well, we will be working with students who started applications during this time, but I cannot guess as to your situation. Be patient as we move through this, and when the application is back up, then see if you can log in, if it shows on the status page, etc. If there is still an issue after that, use the "help" links to contact our technology team. But I stress again, please be patient.

  8. does it matter what major one picks for transfer admission?

  9. Anon: Here is my answer from the same question on a different post. "I am guessing it matters to you what major you choose, but as for admissions, it does not impact the decision."

  10. I have finally been accepted as a transfer for the Spring! What do I need to do next? is there any "commitment" deposit that needs to be made?

    ReplyDelete
  11. Anon: There is no commitment deposit for transfer students, so the next thing you will need to do is sign up for orientation. The orientation site will not be open for Spring students until most likely sometime in October (we are still working with students coming in for Fall!), so be patient on this. An email will go out to all admitted Spring students when the Orientation site opens up.

  12. can anyone send a application or do look at the application until the system is back?

    ReplyDelete
  13. Anon: I am sorry, but I am not sure what you are asking. I can tell you that we are reviewing files now for Spring admission, and when the online application is back up, we will receive those applications and begin the admission process for those files. As well, we are receiving documents for students who have not yet applied, and we will hold these materials until we can match them up with an application.

  14. if an application is sent on the deadline are the chances low of being accepted?

  15. the transfer deadline for spring 2011

  16. Anon: If the transfer applicant meets the consideration criteria and has no major issues (does not pay app. fee, criminal/conduct issue, etc.), then there is a strong chance of admission. If the applicant does not meet the consideration criteria, there is a low chance of admission. Review the transfer section of our site for details of what we look at for admission.
