The UGA Admissions Office has just been given the approval to make admission decisions on all summer transfer applicants. The University has been waiting for more information on the overall budget situation for UGA for next year, but understands the issue of timing for summer students, and has decided to move forward with these decisions. Once the Admissions Office has completed the review of all summer transfers, the University will then review the overall budget situation, the information from the state legislature and the fall transfer applicant pool to determine the next steps for fall admission. Thank you for your patience during this time.
Hooray! I am a Summer Transfer and my status has not changed on the Status Check. Any word on a timeline for our statuses to change?

Taylor: I found out this information about 30 minutes ago, so please be patient with us as we move forward. I do not expect it will take long to make a majority of the decisions due to pre-evaluating the files earlier, but give us more than 19 minutes (the time between my post and your comment).

And, just curious, after you evaluate an application, do you update the status immediately in the computer or do you wait until the end of the day to do a number at a time? Thank you so much!

It has really helped me and I'm sure many, many other people feel just as grateful. I feel so much more informed about the overall admissions process than I did before I began reading and now feel so much calmer in waiting for my application decision. Anon I: As you have probably been seeing from all of my past posts, we have been monitoring the budget sitution all along. We will re-evaluate the budget issue again at the time that we are done with summer transfers to see what we can do about fall transfers. Remember, UGA is not in control of the budget, the state legislature is, so all we can do is get updates on what might happen (or see what has happened). As for updating the status check, it is an overnight update, so all decisions made on Tuesday will show up on Wednesday.

one question....this may seem far fetched but if the budget situation does turn out to be to cut the incoming transfer body by the proposed number will that just affect fall transfers? and how many fall transfer decisions would be left then?
ReplyDeletePatient Fall transfer: No, if we had to limit the number of incoming students due to budget cuts, it would not just impact fall, but fall and beyond. Since we admit transfer students for all three semesters, any impact (and we have no idea if there will be any limitations) would be spread out over all three terms for the future. As I have said before, I will let you know when I know something, but I do not know if there will be any limitations for fall and beyond, so I do not know how many we would be able to admit.
ReplyDeleteHow would you translate quarter hours? All the quarter hours I have taken are 5 hours, which (according to the transfer equivalency search) you divide by 1.5 to get the semester hours it is equal to. 5/1.5=3.33. Would you use 3.3 as a standard number when referring to 5 credit quarter hours or does it depend on the class as to what it transfers as? For example, a 5 credit quarter Biology class- would it transfer as 3.3 or whatever it is worth in semester hours at UGA?

ReplyDeleteAnon: If you look at the transfer equivalency database and how a course transfers, the UGA equivalent course and the associated hours are what you will receive credit for. Generally, 45 quarter hours is equivalent to 30 semester hours. The 1.5 translation is for the broader scheme of all hours, not specific course hours.

I am a hopeful fall transfer applicant and I can't thank you enough for your patience through all this. Do you know where I could find some information about the budget situation? So basically if the 300 million cut passes you will limit admission, and if it doesn't you won't? I know it's probably not that simple, but if there is anywhere I could go and read up about the budget I would greatly appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteLeah: I do not have a link to information on the budget issue, but I would suggest you look at www.georgia.gov for more information on Georgia's state government, and then pull up information on the state legislature. We do not want to guess on what may or may not happen, as we would rather wait and see what will actually occur.

I was denied acceptance to UGA summer semester 2010, but due to my unique situation (screwed up when 18, 28 now with 12 A's at Athens Tech), I have been told that I should try & appeal that decision. I have emailed my written explanation & appeals form to the email address given on the form. I know the deadline is not until April 15, but I have not received any notice that anyone has even received my appeals materials. Is that normal? When do prospective students hear anything? I just want to make sure that all of my documents have been received without driving anyone crazy at the office of admissions. This is REALLY crucial, & important to me. Thanks so much!
ReplyDeleteI may have dreamed this because I can't remember where I heard it so its probably completely wrong, but I heard the legislature has to have a decision by April 15 or rather the vote for the bill is that date. Is there any truth in that?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Since I have nothing to go on concerning your situation (name, bdate, etc., and I would not want you to post this here), I would suggest calling our office and talking with a counselor about your situation. They would also be able to give you a timeline.

ReplyDeleteLS: The transfer equiv. database is tied into the Student Information System. Anytime our evaluators make a change to how a course transfers into UGA (a review of a course by a professor, an applicant with a new college is reviewed, or a new course is added), it is updated the next business day.

Anon: UGA (along with all other state colleges and universities) will not know the tuition costs for next year until our budget is set and the Board of Regents determines the tuition for all institutions.

Anon: I do not have an exact count of the number of overall acceptances that are recinded each year due to grade drops, expulsion, etc. I would estimate that it is below 10, if you take into account both freshman and transfers.

This is probably not a very good question, but is the commitment deposit due only after admission if offered? I can see a yellow triangle next to it on the status check and it confused me a little.

ReplyDeleteDenied applicant: The deadline for fall was April 1, so any transcript we receive "in a month" would have been late for fall term, and thus would not be used. So no, you are not able to update your application beyond the deadline and have a new decision.

Anon: I am not sure if this is your SSN or another number, so I do not want to give you bad advice. My best suggestion is to first contact the health center and ask what number should go on this for incoming students.

ReplyDeleteHello. I have been accepted for Summer 2010 semester and am super excited! I have gotten all of my forms in and signed up for registration on June 1st. I have one question. The wording on my acceptance letter is confusing to me. I thought that if I was accepted to UGA in the summer, and make the grades (which I intend to), I would be a student in the fall and thereafter. I don't have to reapply to I? Aren't I already in?
