While we show the average number of AP/IB courses, we look at the entire course selection, and the accepted students have challenged themselves with a wide range of Honors and Advanced courses, and a number of college courses taken through Joint Enrollment/Dual Enrollment programs.
Congratulations to the admitted class of 2014! Now we just have to wait and see who chooses to attend, so send in your deposit if UGA is your school of choice.
These are all the stats I can give you right now, so please do not ask for other data, as I will just have to say no. Our office is focused on phone calls, emails, WL information and transfer reviews, so I cannot always slog through the data.

ReplyDeleteWhen does the application for transfer students for Spring normally open up? I know the deadline is sometime in September, but I was wondering how early it opened. Also, I noticed on some of the majors they say to transfer in as a third-year student you must have certain classes completed or in progress, but if I am wanting to transfer in as a Sophomore with around 30 hours, do I still have to have those classes done? Thanks so much!

Chase: I do not have an exact date, but my estimate would be sometime in June. For some programs at UGA (for instance Business majors), you would be admitted as a Pre-Bus. major, and then apply to the program after you have taken certain steps, but it specific classes either at UGA or transferred in, an entrance exam, etc.
ReplyDeleteWhat exactly does middle 50% mean? Does that mean you accepted students with scores and gpa's less than these? I am curious because my child was denied with scores equal to or better than these figures.
ReplyDeleteAnon: The middle 50% means that there were students who were above these ranges and below these ranges, but that this is the middle 50% (25%-75%) of the admitted group. There will always be a wide range of data, especially within the SAT/ACT scores, since we have stated that of the three academic factors, grades and rigor are most important. We are looking at the overall situation, not just one factor.
ReplyDeleteHow would you calculate the grades of someone coming from the IB program? A 7 is of course an A, but is a 6 "excellent" or "good"? And what about the extra points for TOK/EE?

Anon: I think you are mixing up how we review a students grades (the course grades for the IB classes that we use to calculate a GPA) with the IB exam results, which are used to determine if you will receive any college course credit. For course credit, look at the registrar's office for more details.

I was the one with the IB question.. Well, I took the IB program so I have no other grades than IB. I know that American students rarely take the full program, but I'm an international student. You must calculate some kind of grade average for those in my situation, don't you?

ReplyDeleteAnon: Since we do not know how many people will stay on the wait-list, and we will not know until the second week of May how many people will have committed to UGA, it will be at least mid May before we will generally know anything about the wait-list.

Anon: Actually, a fair number of US students take the IB program and obtain an IB diploma. Again, you would generally receive a grade in the class, and then a grade on the IB exam. If not, we would do our best to determine your grades based upon the exams.
UGA 2014: This would be a great question for Housing, so I suggest you contact them about your situation.
Well considering the middle 50% stats for the admitted students, I fell slightly below the average. I'm still surprised I got in! UGA '14!

ReplyDeleteAnon II: You will have a dedicated high speed line, and on campus there is PAWS wireless network connection. You would have to work with housing and PAWS to know exact specifics for each. As for cars, yes freshman are allowed to have them on campus.

Chase: We do not base transfer decisions based on a % of applicants, but on space availability and the number of applicants. Over the last 3 terms (summer, fall and spring), we enrolled about 2,400 transfer applicants.

Anon: That was 2,400 transfers that enrolled over the 3 terms as a whole (we could not handle 2,400 new transfers each term!
ReplyDeleteAnon II: I do not have that information concerning the number/% of transfers that meet the consideration requirements and are not admitted. What would keep a person from being admitted would be a lack of space at UGA, misconduct issues, suspension issues, etc.
All I have to say is I hope there is room for me starting next Spring! Haha :)

ReplyDeleteAnon: If you have not been denied, then all you can take from that is that you have not been denied. I have no idea if you would be admitted, as I do not know your academic situation or the overall situation concerning transfer admission yet. Seriously, I do not know.

ReplyDeleteFor my transfer application, I selected my major as Biology. When I told my friend, he freaked out and said I should have selected Unspecified because now the chances of me being admitted are slimmer. Also, I am applying as a sophomore. Does selecting a major really matter that much? Does a person have a better chance of being admitted if they select Unspecified?

When will the last of the Charter Scholarships be awarded, or are they already all gone? From an OOS parent.
ReplyDeleteChase: If the student was denied, it was due to not meeting the required consideration level of grades and hours. I am guessing that if they were told anything, it would be what I have been saying for the past month or so, that we are not making any admission decisions yet. She might have then misunderstood this.

As a follow-up to the post above regarding scholarships, is there anything a student can do to increase their chances of receiving a scholarship? Does showing interest help? It is frustrating because I know people who have recieved charter scholarships who have no intention of enrolling at Georgia. It is my first choice even though I have very good scholarships at other schools. Any information in this regard will be appreciated.
ReplyDeleteAnon: UGA does not look at "shown interest" in determining admission or scholarships, and there is nothing you can actively do to increase your chances of receiving a scholarship. We understand that there will be students who decide not to attend UGA and have been offered a scholarship, and that is why we over-offer based upon past history of offered scholarships vs. accepted scholarships.

ReplyDeleteAnon: We look at the semester grades (or trimester grades if you are in that system) when we calculate grades for a high school gpa with semesters involved. We look at the individual teacher grades for each term, whether that is a semester, a block schedule full year grade, or a trimester grade. We do not use the year average grade.

My son was accepted at UGA and we have just submitted the commitment deposit. In your experience, what is the proper etiquette these days in informing other schools of a declination; simply don't submit deposit or should my son contact schools to formally decline offers.
ReplyDeleteAnon Parent: My suggestion is to have your son contact that school and let them know he will not be attending. This will give them a better understanding of the applicant pool, and will allow them to focus on other students.

Matthew David: I do not "chance" students on this blog, as UGA admission is more complicated than this. If you apply EA, there are three possible outcomes; admit, deny or defer. If you are denied, that means the end of the process. If you are deferred, you are treated the same as any other applicant, EA or RD. I would also suggest you search "myths" and try and get an idea of the false rumors that always get spread about UGA Admissions. Then ignore the rumors.

ReplyDeleteAnon: While I wish I could give you a specific answer about which business school is better, I do not feel comfortable doing this. Both UGA and GT have strong business schools, and if you look at the rankings, they are in the top both in overall undergraduate programs and in some specific programs.
ReplyDeleteI would suggest you visit both colleges (and business schools) to see which is a better overall match to what you are looking for in a college and a specific business degree.
How does UGA weigh the courses for the GPA?

Anon: UGA adds weight for any AP or IB (not pre-AP or pre-IB) courses, and we add .5 to the 4.0 scale grade. We do not add weight for Honors courses, as they are not standardized.

ReplyDeleteYou should report the teacher grades as they are listed on your transcript, so if the teacher grades have an added weight, do not remove this weight, but instead enter in the grades as they are on the transcript. UGA knows the policies of the schools and weighting, and we have a process in place to not add weight for AP/IB courses if your school already does this. To repeat, look at your transcript and enter in the term grades from there."

Anon: The state of Georgia does not have an specific number or percentage of in-state students that we are required to accept. As such, we treat all applicants, in-state and out-of-state, the same during the admission process.
