Fall Transfer Decisions!
After a review of the application numbers, the projected enrollment numbers for the overall student body next year, along with discussions about future budget issues, the University of Georgia will move forward with Fall transfer admission decisions based upon the review criteria that is already in place. Please remember that this is not a quick process, as transfer application evaluation takes a while for each file. UGA has a rolling transfer admission decision process, so we will review files and make decisions on a day to day basis, with the decisions showing up on the status check the next business day. Please make sure that all transcripts have been sent to UGA, and all transcripts are up-to-date based upon the dates that are shown on the status check. I am sure that everyone is very excited about this (including our office), and please be patient as we review these files.

I know you said that during the budget confusion you guys were preevaluating. Will those show up on the status check tomorrow? Thanks!! This news is so exciting and a such a relief.
ReplyDeleteWhew: We are still finishing the last of the summer decisions, but you will see the pre-evaluated fall decisions going out this week (there were not a huge number, though). As I have said before, it takes a while to review each transfer application.
ReplyDeleteIdk how this affects the other fall transfers but... THANK YOU MR GRAVES and YOUR STAFF
ReplyDeletewoohoo!! finally!!! I was just curious also, does having a large amount of CLEP tests in one's transcripts affect how they are evaluated? I have passed 20 credits worth of classes so far via CLEP. I assume that as long as they are on my college's transcripts as well then they should be accepted just fine. By the way, what is UGA's limit for the amount of CLEP tests that you can do?
ReplyDeleteAnon: I cannot say what will happen with your CLEP tests until our office is able to look at your file. There is no listed limit, but there are only a limited number of CLEP tests that UGA accepts.
ReplyDeletethat is kind of troubling news about the CLEP test situation. I wonder if you might have a link to where I could view which CLEP tests are accepted? I am currently going to the College of Coastal Georgia and I assumed everything would transfer just fine since it is apart of the University System of Georgia.
ReplyDeleteAnon: Maybe I was not clear in my statement. We will have to look at your transcript to know what is going on with your CLEP exams, and I cannot comment on it since I am not looking at the transcript. As far as a student taking CLEP exams and submitting them to UGA directly (not through another college by transfer), there is a limited number of CLEP courses we can take.
ReplyDeletecan you please specify "review criteria that is already in place?" Does this mean the 30-59 hours 3.2 GPA/60+ hours 2.8 GPA?Thanks.
ReplyDeleteKennedy: Yes, that is the review criteria that is already in place (although I list it as 30-59 with a 3.20, and 60+ with a 2.80, as we do not round up to the tenths place in GPA).
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! Thank you so much for letting us know! My transcript was received by UGA on February 17 so hopefully I'll hear something soon.
ReplyDeleteScratch that, I just saw I got accepted, woohoo! I'm upgrading from a Wolf to a Dawg!
ReplyDeleteAre the files reviewed in order in which they were received?
ReplyDeleteAnon: We generally review files based upon when they have been completed, but we also have reviewed some filed per a request of an academic department on campus.
ReplyDeletecongrats kelly!!
ReplyDeletehow many or what range of files have already been completed ..well preevaluated? and when will they be released?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Approximately 2,500 people have applied, and we are less than 2 weeks past the deadline. As such, I am not able to go into an overall view of the pre-evaluated vs. still to evaluate discussion. As I have said before, be patient, as decisions will roll out on a daily basis. I have said a number of times that transfer decisions will be going out through the month of May, so please be patient.
ReplyDeleteDo you know how many fall transfers you will be able to accept?
ReplyDeleteWould an updated transcript change an applicant's completion time?
ReplyDeleteThis news has made my day! Thank you for keeping us up to date!
ReplyDeletesself: Yes, an updated transcript if sent within the deadline time might change the timeline somewhat.
ReplyDeleteAnon: No, we do not have a specific cap on transfers, but have done research on past transfer applicant years, and try to predict the best we can.
ok thanks, it made it two days before the deadline.
ReplyDeleteThis is great news! My transcript was received in mid January. Is there a strong possibility that my application has already been pre-evaluated?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Seriously, I would have no idea if you have been pre-evaluated or not, where you fall within the order of things, etc. I am not trying to be rude, but it would depend upon the timing of you and the other applicants, when they were complete, etc., and I just do not have that information.
ReplyDeleteWhat about students that are wanting to transfer next spring? Is there any information regarding that yet?
ReplyDeleteAnon: It is way too early for us to predict what will be the situation for Spring transfers. My suggestion would be to have a strong academic record so that you will be viewed as a strong applicant for Spring.
ReplyDeleteWould a 3.6 or 3.7 GPA be considered strong for a student who has 30 hours completed?
ReplyDeleteI logged into my status check today and for the first time it said I did not have my transcript sent. The status check had said it was sent on 1/20/10. I logged in again and it said that the transcript was sent. Should I be concerned and is there any other way to make sure there is not a mix up wuth my transcript?
ReplyDeleteAnon I: I cannot say what will be a "strong" GPA for a future transfer applicant, as it also depends upon what grades the other applicants have. What I would say that those type of grades put you in a good position for the future.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: The status check is updated overnight, so it would not change from minute to minute. I am guessing that this has more to do with your computer and possibly the connection. If you lost the connection in the middle of checking the status check, it might only give you partial data. Since you then went back on and saw that we received the transcript on 1/20, you should be just fine.
How do you decide who gets pre-evaluated or not?
ReplyDeleteAnon: While we were waiting to hear about being able to begin making fall transfer decisions, we started to pre-evaluate files (and this is after we made almost all of the summer transfer decisions). We started with the earliest completed applicants that we could easily review (some files take 2+ days to go over due to the number of transcripts and how the classes may come in), and went from there.
ReplyDeleteWe have for the most part now sent out decisions on all the pre-evaluated applicants (not a huge number due to the small window of time), and we are now reviewing files on a day to day basis and making decisions as we evaluation the applications. We ask that all applicants please be patient, as it takes a while to evaluate files, post credit for the courses, and make decisions.
this may sound silly but are the constant questions slowing down the decision process?
ReplyDeletePatient transfer: The questions on the blog are not slowing down transfer decisions (although the repetitive ones are taking some time away from other areas), but phone calls/emails to our office with questions for a transfer evaluator do slow down the process a little.
ReplyDeleteIf I get accepted or denied, what will I see on the status check? Right now all it says is, "We have recieved your application and may still be matching it with other test scores...." I just kind of want to know what to watch out for!
ReplyDeleteI got in!!! To tell all the freshman out there that didn't get in...just take this as motivation and in a year or so transfer and you may get lucky as i did. Thanks so much Dgraves
ReplyDeleteexcited/scared: The text will be very different when a decision is released, and it will be specific as to a decision.
ReplyDeletePatient transfer: Congratulations.
Everyone: While some of you may want to ask other people following this blog about their personal information (GPA, hours, colleges, etc.), this blog is not the appropriate place to do this. I understand that you are not asking for any negative or harmful reason, but I do not feel comfortable in allowing posts with personal information on them. Sorry, but that is just the way that it is!
ReplyDeleteOn average, about how many transfer decisions are you sending out each day?
ReplyDeleteI think I saw that you said the status page is updated overnight, is that the only time it is updated?
ReplyDeleteAnon I: On average, we send out about 40-50 transfer decisions a day. For the first few days, we did about 100 a day due to pre-evaluation of earlier files, but we are now going day by day as we have made decisions on all the pre-evaluated files.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: Occasionally (once every week at most), we may update the system during the day for other issues, but generally, we update once a day during an overnight process.
to make some of you guys feel better i checked my application every morning aroung 8am but on tuesday around 5pm it showed that i was accepted so just be patient like Dgraves said. It is very worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteDoes race/ethnicity matter at all in your admission decisions? For example if the person applying is native american or hispanic?
ReplyDeleteAnon: UGA does not use race or ethnicity as a factor in the review of admissions applications. I would suggest you look at http://www.admissions.uga.edu/article/top_ten_uga_admissions_urban_legends.html for other misconceptions about admission (most of these myths apply to the freshman applicant group).
ReplyDeleteFor the pre-evaluated files, around when were those applications complete? Mine was complete Jan 20th, and I was just wondering where I fall in the order of things.
ReplyDeleteAnon: I cannot say within all certainty, but I believe that the small group of pre-evaluated files were complete prior to January.
ReplyDeleteHow many fall transfer students have been accepted so far?
ReplyDeleteHow many transfer applications for the fall have you received?
ReplyDeleteAnon: We have received approximately 2,500 fall transfer applications, and we have released just over 250 decisions so far.
ReplyDeleteThe 250 released decisions that have been released so far, does that include the accepted and denied decision or just accepted?
ReplyDeleteWhen you say 250 decisions, does that mean they got in, or does that also include those who got denied?
ReplyDeleteAnon: That means 250 decisions, which includes acceptances and denials.
ReplyDeletesay a student is transferring into your school to be considered a fashion merchandising major compared to someone going into being a biology major. do they have a better chance of getting in being that the biology major is already so big and seeing that the applicant has already gotten ALL (associates degree) out of the way and has taken fashion classes at another school?
ReplyDeletefashionista: No, the fashion merch. applicant would not have a better chance. First, you are assuming that the biology department has an issue with the student/faculty ratio, but there is always a review of the faculty needed in different departments every year in comparison with the student numbers. Second, the biology major might also have a broad range of core classes taken care of with his transfer work.
ReplyDeleteFor transfers, the focus is on grades and hours. That is why we post the admission consideration levels, so applicants will know if they are competitive or not. If you do not meet the consideration levels, the general decision will be a denial. If you are at or above the consideration levels, there is a strong chance for admission (but I am not guaranteeing an acceptance decision).
okay i will keep that in mind thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhy do some people find out at 8 in the morning, and others at in the afternoon if the status check only updates at night?
ReplyDeleteAnon: As I said in an earlier comment, there is an occasional update to the system (maybe once a week) for other reasons that then updates the status check whenever that update occurs. Thus, students that were admitted before the update on that day would see decisions after the update. But as a whole, the system goes on an overnight update.
ReplyDeleteDGraves, whats the deposit for transfer students.. Or is it the same as First year.. trying to get the ball rolling..
ReplyDeleteMy Application was completed on December 23rd. does that mean I have a high chance of finding out my status sometime within the next two weeks. Sorry if this is redundant to our questions I am just getting nervous.
ReplyDeletecalpow: There is no deposit for transfer students.
ReplyDeleteAnon: I do not guess about individual files, whether it is for an admission decision or a timeline. Sorry!
DGraves: Just found this today. It has been very helpful. Thanks for answering all the questions!
ReplyDeletedoes being an international student have any effect on transfer admission? i applied/all transcripts were received to uga in early march, my uga transfer gpa is well above the 3.2 consideration and my transfer credit hours fall in the 40's range.
ReplyDeletecould the reason i haven't heard back yet be because the admissions office may be still matching other intl. paperwork to my file?
Is there a date that all students will know yes or no by? Since most students applying are looking to transfer regardless and deadlines are getting close for housing and commitment at other schools.
ReplyDeleteAnon: I could not guess about your international documents, but if you completed your file in early March, it is just that we have not gotten to your file yet for a decision.
ReplyDeleteAnon: No, there is no set date, as it depends upon the volume of applicants and how long it takes to review the completed files.
If my application as a Fall 2010 Transfer Student was complete and received on February 3rd, do you have any idea of when I will hear from UGA Admissions(I'm just looking for a general time period.)? What is the average time period that people(accepted or denied) hear back from UGA Admissions?
ReplyDeleteAnon: As I said above, I do not guess about decisions or timelines. Sorry!
ReplyDeleteIf I am transferring and will complete my Associates degree in May will I have a strong chance in getting in?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Transfer admission is not based upon the completion of an AA, but instead is based upon your grades and hours, so it depends upon those factors.
ReplyDeleteI have heard if you do better each semester that they look at this in considering admission. Is this a myth?
ReplyDeleteIs there any way you could give an estimated guess of the date the applications you are now reviewing were completed? In no way do I want an exact answer, I would just feel some bit of relief having an idea of where mine fell in the bunch.
ReplyDeleteAnon: Sorry to tell you, but for transfer admission review, the idea of a growth in GPA being considered in a positive light is wrong. In the freshman file reading process, yes, but not in the transfer process.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: I cannot give a date that is accurate, so I would rather not go there.
I got accepted!!! I'm a Florida fan by heritage, but I'm SO glad to call myself a Georgia Bulldog now!!!! :)
ReplyDeleteWill the files you are checking go in order from who sent them in first to last? And is this the order we will find out if we got accepted or not?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Please review some of the more recent comments, as your question has already been answered.
ReplyDeleteI've been accepted to UGA as a regular decision student. What kind of grades do I need to make this semester to ensure that my acceptance isn't taken back? (I am in 3 AP courses and 1 regular course currently).
ReplyDeleteDan: I am not quite sure how to answer this question. Do your best? Make good grades? I generally do not have a standard answer for what is the baseline you need to make for freshman applicants in order to stay admitted. Overall, I would say that you need to keep up with what you have been doing previously, and if you make any seriously poor grades (D or F grades for instance), you should send an email along with your final transcript explaining what happened.
ReplyDeleteI applied and sent my transcript February 1st and I see there are people finding out when they applied later. Does this mean anything?
ReplyDeletePreviously my application had check marks next to all my transcripts, and now there's an additional transcript needed from the same university, should I send in that transcript now? Or should I contact UGA admissions? Could it be possible I sent it in too early last December, and it doesn't have my last semester grades on it?
ReplyDeleteAnon I: Maybe you and I are seeing different things, as I have not seen anyone mention the date of their application materials and if they were admitted. As I have said before, we generally go by the completion date, but at times have reviewed files for a specific department where the completion date may have been later.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: I would not want to guess, but I would suggest contacting an admissions counselor on Monday. It could be that the first semester grades are not on the earlier transcript, but only a review of the file would give a correct answer.
Is a 3.20 GPA stronger in the 30-59 range or 60 + range?
ReplyDeletehey i withdrew from a class prior to my schools withdraw date (march 1 st) with this affect my decision to be revoke for fall?
ReplyDeletei have a W, 3 A's and 2 B's on my final transcript hopefully
Anon: If we ever raised the GPA requirement on the two groups, then the 3.20 on 60+ would be seen as stronger, as the student has maintained a strong GPA for longer. But that is not a factor at this time.
ReplyDeletepatient transfer: No, a W on a college transcript will not have a negative impact (although a WF would).
ok thanks so much
ReplyDeleteIs a 3.30 GPA strong when a student has 60+ hours?
ReplyDeleteMight we find out our status over the weekend? Or should we not even bother to check on Sat. and Sun.?
ReplyDeleteAnon: While I have answered this type of question before (transfer GPA), I am not sure what you are looking to get from my answer of whether a GPA is strong or not. I cannot promise admission based upon a GPA, as there are other factors. As such, I would say that a 3.30 GPA is a strong one, but after that I cannot say much.
ReplyDeleteAnon: Generally, you would not see any change over the weekend (unless we needed to update our database on late Friday for research on other information), so I would suggest focusing on business days and the status check.
Hi, has the admissions office reached the January applicants yet? I understand it may be hard to get really specific with the dates of the reviewed applicatications, but even a ballpark estimate would help. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI've applied to transfer from perimeter college through the TAG program. After I graduate this spring and have my spring transcripts mailed to you guys, do you know how long it would take to know if I got in?
ReplyDeleteI am wondering how many tranfer students UGA will be accepting for fall term 2010? Also how many have you all already accepted?
ReplyDeleteAnon: It is a little hectic around here, as we are trying to move through the files as quickly as possible. As such, I cannot give any general dates right now, as it is too tough to pin down.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: Seriously, I would have no clue. It depends upon when you get in your transcript, what else is hitting the office at that time (5,000 final high school transcripts, updated transcripts for admitted transfers, etc.)
Anon: I do not know a specific number of transfers that we will admit for the fall, as it depends upon what the applicant pool is like, and we have not reviewed all of them. I do not have an exact number of admits at this time, and it changes daily.
ReplyDeleteDoes UGA take into account where the student is transferring from? For example, would someone from community college with a high GPA have a better chance of being admitted over someone with a lower GPA from a top ranked school?
ReplyDeleteAnon: We look at where a student is transferring from in order to determine if the college is regionally accredited, but as for weighing one college vs another, no we do not. We treat all colleges equally within the review.
ReplyDeleteAs of today, how many decisions have you given out? (Like number wise).
ReplyDeleteAnon: See my response two previous comments ago.
ReplyDeleteCan people switch their major after admitted?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Freshman can go to the Information Change form to change their major, but transfers are not allowed to change majors once they are admitted. Once transfers enroll at UGA, they can work with their advisor in making any changes, but that is after enrollment.
ReplyDeleteThis may sound really stupid, but how is enrollment different from admitted?
ReplyDeleteAnon: If you are admitted, you can then choose to attend/enroll or not. Enrolling is when you actually begin attending the college/university.
ReplyDeleteIf we were denied for the Fall 2010 semester as a transfer, would this hurt our chances of getting in if we apply for Spring 2011?
ReplyDeleteAnon: No, a previous denial decision does not have an impact on future decisions.
ReplyDeletewhat about a previous acceptance? If I was accepted in High School, but then decided to go somewhere else, and I still meet all of the requirements, is my previous acceptance taken into account?
ReplyDeleteAnon: No, a previous acceptance is not taken into account either, as it was based upon high school data, not transfer. You now fall into the transfer process, and we look only at your transfer work, so you will be reviewed based on that information.
ReplyDeleteIf someone is accepted then they drop just below the 3.2 or 2.8 GPA requirement do they lose acceptance?
ReplyDeleteAnon: It depends upon the seriousness of the issue. If a student drops just below the level, and did not have any serious problems, then they will most likely be okay. But if a student bombs their last term, has D/F grades, goes on probation, has a discipline issue, etc., then there could be consequences.
ReplyDeleteMy transcript was received after the April 1st deadline. Is my application still being considered?
ReplyDeleteDGraves:
ReplyDeleteWould someone with 59 hours be looked at any different than someone with 30 hours? I am just wondering if me having 30 hours at the transfer deadline will effect my chances of getting in (I meet all the requirements)..
Anon I: We generally give a short grace period for materials received after the deadline due to the sending colleges issues, but only a short one. If the materials were well after the deadline (over 15 business days), your application may not be considered.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: Transfer applicants who have 30 hours are treated the same as applicants with 59 hours.
how long does it take to review a file that was completed 4 months ago? This is the only college ive ever heard of that actually waits until the deadline to review applicants. I dont know anyone who has applied to a college this semester that hasnt heard back yet. If you guys arent going to finish soon then can you please update us on how far along you are?
ReplyDeleteIf you have attended more than one college, will the grades from each institution be counted towards the GPA equally?
ReplyDeleteAnon: Actually, we do not wait until the deadline to review applications, but that is the easiest timeframe for our front desk people to give as to the overall situation. Please remember, though, that we have about 25,000 total applications per year to review, and we must take them in a certain order. Freshman applicants must be reviewed to have a response by late March, then summer transfers, then fall transfers. If you then add into this the problems that we had due to the state budget, then you have a delay added into this.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at selective colleges, you will see that quite a few have timelines that are later than some other institutions. UVA has a May 1 transfer decision date, UNC responds in late April, and GT is a rolling timeline, with many decisions being later than May. As I say to freshman applicants that wish for an earlier decision, would you like a quick decision that might not be what you want, or for us to take the time needed and make an accurate decision?
As I have done before, I will try to post an update on transfers, but I cannot do it every day, and some things depend on when a student completed their file.
How far along are you all on reviewing applications? Of course it's an unreal expectation for you to be able to give an exact number but can't you let us know if you are nowhere near being done, or about halfway there, etc.? If 2500 applications were submitted for Fall as you stated I sure I am not the only one out of those 2500 who is getting more and more anxious everyday for an answer.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteAnon: If a student has attended more than one college, we will look at all the grades at all the colleges to come up with an overall GPA. We focus on the specific grades, hours and classes, not the GPA listed at the end of the transcript.
ReplyDeleteAnon: I will try and post something tomorrow about the overall progress of the transfer decisions, but please remember that these files take a while to go through. Again, some files are quick, but others can take up a large part of the day trying to determine how the classes transfer into UGA. Please be patient as we review these files.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the answer. We cant wait to find out:)
ReplyDeleteHow does UGA look at a D in a course? Will they give credit or does it have to be taken again?
ReplyDeleteAnon: We will use a D grade in the transfer calculation. As for whether is will count towards a degree, it depends upon the class. We will not accept it for our English 1101 course, and it will depend upon the class and the major for which you are applying. For instance, a Chemistry major has to have a C or better for all major courses as listed in the UGA bulletin (see http://bulletin.uga.edu/).
ReplyDelete
