After a review of the application numbers, the projected enrollment numbers for the overall student body next year, along with discussions about future budget issues, the University of Georgia will move forward with Fall transfer admission decisions based upon the review criteria that is already in place. Please remember that this is not a quick process, as transfer application evaluation takes a while for each file. UGA has a rolling transfer admission decision process, so we will review files and make decisions on a day to day basis, with the decisions showing up on the status check the next business day. Please make sure that all transcripts have been sent to UGA, and all transcripts are up-to-date based upon the dates that are shown on the status check. I am sure that everyone is very excited about this (including our office), and please be patient as we review these files.
I know you said that during the budget confusion you guys were preevaluating. Will those show up on the status check tomorrow? Thanks!! This news is so exciting and a such a relief.

ReplyDeletewoohoo!! finally!!! I was just curious also, does having a large amount of CLEP tests in one's transcripts affect how they are evaluated? I have passed 20 credits worth of classes so far via CLEP. I assume that as long as they are on my college's transcripts as well then they should be accepted just fine. By the way, what is UGA's limit for the amount of CLEP tests that you can do?
ReplyDeleteAnon: I cannot say what will happen with your CLEP tests until our office is able to look at your file. There is no listed limit, but there are only a limited number of CLEP tests that UGA accepts.

We will have to look at your transcript to know what is going on with your CLEP exams, and I cannot comment on it since I am not looking at the transcript. As far as a student taking CLEP exams and submitting them to UGA directly (not through another college by transfer), there is a limited number of CLEP courses we can take.

I have said a number of times that transfer decisions will be going out through the month of May, so please be patient.

ReplyDeleteAnon: It is way too early for us to predict what will be the situation for Spring transfers. My suggestion would be to have a strong academic record so that you will be viewed as a strong applicant for Spring.

ReplyDeleteI logged into my status check today and for the first time it said I did not have my transcript sent. The status check had said it was sent on 1/20/10. I logged in again and it said that the transcript was sent. Should I be concerned and is there any other way to make sure there is not a mix up wuth my transcript?
ReplyDeleteAnon I: I cannot say what will be a "strong" GPA for a future transfer applicant, as it also depends upon what grades the other applicants have. What I would say that those type of grades put you in a good position for the future.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: The status check is updated overnight, so it would not change from minute to minute. I am guessing that this has more to do with your computer and possibly the connection. If you lost the connection in the middle of checking the status check, it might only give you partial data. Since you then went back on and saw that we received the transcript on 1/20, you should be just fine.
How do you decide who gets pre-evaluated or not?
ReplyDeleteAnon: While we were waiting to hear about being able to begin making fall transfer decisions, we started to pre-evaluate files (and this is after we made almost all of the summer transfer decisions). We started with the earliest completed applicants that we could easily review (some files take 2+ days to go over due to the number of transcripts and how the classes may come in), and went from there.
ReplyDeleteWe have for the most part now sent out decisions on all the pre-evaluated applicants (not a huge number due to the small window of time), and we are now reviewing files on a day to day basis and making decisions as we evaluation the applications. We ask that all applicants please be patient, as it takes a while to evaluate files, post credit for the courses, and make decisions.

ReplyDeletePatient transfer: The questions on the blog are not slowing down transfer decisions (although the repetitive ones are taking some time away from other areas), but phone calls/emails to our office with questions for a transfer evaluator do slow down the process a little.

ReplyDeleteAnon I: On average, we send out about 40-50 transfer decisions a day. For the first few days, we did about 100 a day due to pre-evaluation of earlier files, but we are now going day by day as we have made decisions on all the pre-evaluated files.

to make some of you guys feel better i checked my application every morning aroung 8am but on tuesday around 5pm it showed that i was accepted so just be patient like Dgraves said. It is very worth the wait!

First, you are assuming that the biology department has an issue with the student/faculty ratio, but there is always a review of the faculty needed in different departments every year in comparison with the student numbers. Second, the biology major might also have a broad range of core classes taken care of with his transfer work.
ReplyDeleteFor transfers, the focus is on grades and hours. That is why we post the admission consideration levels, so applicants will know if they are competitive or not. If you do not meet the consideration levels, the general decision will be a denial. If you are at or above the consideration levels, there is a strong chance for admission (but I am not guaranteeing an acceptance decision).

ReplyDeleteWhy do some people find out at 8 in the morning, and others at in the afternoon if the status check only updates at night?
ReplyDeleteAnon: As I said in an earlier comment, there is an occasional update to the system (maybe once a week) for other reasons that then updates the status check whenever that update occurs. Thus, students that were admitted before the update on that day would see decisions after the update. But as a whole, the system goes on an overnight update.

ReplyDeleteAnon: Transfer admission is not based upon the completion of an AA, but instead is based upon your grades and hours, so it depends upon those factors.

ReplyDeleteDan: I am not quite sure how to answer this question. Do your best? Make good grades? I generally do not have a standard answer for what is the baseline you need to make for freshman applicants in order to stay admitted. Overall, I would say that you need to keep up with what you have been doing previously, and if you make any seriously poor grades (D or F grades for instance), you should send an email along with your final transcript explaining what happened.

ReplyDeleteAnon I: Maybe you and I are seeing different things, as I have not seen anyone mention the date of their application materials and if they were admitted. As I have said before, we generally go by the completion date, but at times have reviewed files for a specific department where the completion date may have been later.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: I would not want to guess, but I would suggest contacting an admissions counselor on Monday. It could be that the first semester grades are not on the earlier transcript, but only a review of the file would give a correct answer.

Anon: If we ever raised the GPA requirement on the two groups, then the 3.20 on 60+ would be seen as stronger, as the student has maintained a strong GPA for longer. But that is not a factor at this time.

ReplyDeleteAnon: While I have answered this type of question before (transfer GPA), I am not sure what you are looking to get from my answer of whether a GPA is strong or not. I cannot promise admission based upon a GPA, as there are other factors. As such, I would say that a 3.30 GPA is a strong one, but after that I cannot say much.

ReplyDeleteAnon: It is a little hectic around here, as we are trying to move through the files as quickly as possible. As such, I cannot give any general dates right now, as it is too tough to pin down.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: Seriously, I would have no clue. It depends upon when you get in your transcript, what else is hitting the office at that time (5,000 final high school transcripts, updated transcripts for admitted transfers, etc.)
Anon: I do not know a specific number of transfers that we will admit for the fall, as it depends upon what the applicant pool is like, and we have not reviewed all of them. I do not have an exact number of admits at this time, and it changes daily.

ReplyDeleteAnon: We look at where a student is transferring from in order to determine if the college is regionally accredited, but as for weighing one college vs another, no we do not. We treat all colleges equally within the review.

ReplyDeleteAnon: Freshman can go to the Information Change form to change their major, but transfers are not allowed to change majors once they are admitted. Once transfers enroll at UGA, they can work with their advisor in making any changes, but that is after enrollment.

ReplyDeleteAnon: No, a previous acceptance is not taken into account either, as it was based upon high school data, not transfer. You now fall into the transfer process, and we look only at your transfer work, so you will be reviewed based on that information.

ReplyDeleteAnon: It depends upon the seriousness of the issue. If a student drops just below the level, and did not have any serious problems, then they will most likely be okay. But if a student bombs their last term, has D/F grades, goes on probation, has a discipline issue, etc., then there could be consequences.

Anon I: We generally give a short grace period for materials received after the deadline due to the sending colleges issues, but only a short one. If the materials were well after the deadline (over 15 business days), your application may not be considered.

how long does it take to review a file that was completed 4 months ago? This is the only college ive ever heard of that actually waits until the deadline to review applicants. I dont know anyone who has applied to a college this semester that hasnt heard back yet. If you guys arent going to finish soon then can you please update us on how far along you are?

ReplyDeleteAnon: Actually, we do not wait until the deadline to review applications, but that is the easiest timeframe for our front desk people to give as to the overall situation. Please remember, though, that we have about 25,000 total applications per year to review, and we must take them in a certain order. Freshman applicants must be reviewed to have a response by late March, then summer transfers, then fall transfers. If you then add into this the problems that we had due to the state budget, then you have a delay added into this.
ReplyDeleteIf you look at selective colleges, you will see that quite a few have timelines that are later than some other institutions. UVA has a May 1 transfer decision date, UNC responds in late April, and GT is a rolling timeline, with many decisions being later than May. As I say to freshman applicants that wish for an earlier decision, would you like a quick decision that might not be what you want, or for us to take the time needed and make an accurate decision?
As I have done before, I will try to post an update on transfers, but I cannot do it every day, and some things depend on when a student completed their file.
How far along are you all on reviewing applications? Of course it's an unreal expectation for you to be able to give an exact number but can't you let us know if you are nowhere near being done, or about halfway there, etc.? If 2500 applications were submitted for Fall as you stated I sure I am not the only one out of those 2500 who is getting more and more anxious everyday for an answer.

ReplyDeleteAnon: If a student has attended more than one college, we will look at all the grades at all the colleges to come up with an overall GPA. We focus on the specific grades, hours and classes, not the GPA listed at the end of the transcript.

ReplyDeleteAnon: We will use a D grade in the transfer calculation. As for whether is will count towards a degree, it depends upon the class. We will not accept it for our English 1101 course, and it will depend upon the class and the major for which you are applying. For instance, a Chemistry major has to have a C or better for all major courses as listed in the UGA bulletin (see http://bulletin.uga.edu/).
