Yes, the question that all freshmen applicants (and their parents) have been asking again and again can finally be answered. Final decisions for freshmen applicants will be released on Friday, March 26! As normal, we will open up the status check late afternoon on Friday, and applicants will be able to view their decisions. As well, decision letters will be sent out by mail.
There will be three decision groups (Admit, Deny and Wait-List), and in a nod to the great blog that Dean J does at UVA, I will try to post some information on all three of these decisions. Starting on Friday, I will also change the settings on the comment section so that I can monitor any comments before allowing them to post to the site. No matter what your decision, please make sure to think before commenting, as this is an emotional time, and you probably do not want to write something you may regret later.
Remember, we cannot and will not give out any decisions by phone or by email, and we are as happy as you are to have decision day finally be here.

Will transfer students receive their decision Friday?
ReplyDeleteHanah: First, individual transfer decisions are not quick, and it takes a while to review each one. As well, until the latest issue with the budget situation, we would do transfer decisions on a rolling basis (release decisions day by day as we made them). Since we have not been given specifics about the budget, we cannot move forward with transfer decisions yet, but we hope to be able to soon.

ReplyDeleteAnon II: Generally, we will have about 1,000-1,3000 students on the wait-list every year. When we do our holistic review, we are able to determine the strongest group of students (looking at the rough numbers above) who we are not able to admit and put these on the wait-list.
Do you atleast have a rough estimate of how many admits for this last wave? 2000+ I hope!!

ReplyDeleteAhhh I am so anxious. Thank you DGraves for this blog- I've been checking it daily for the past several months, even sometimes more than once a day, and it has helped so much. You've been so helpful and patient answering all of these questions. It is relieving to finally know a specific day when the decisions are being released but now I'm so nervous!
ReplyDeleteBased on past posts it sounds like it will be under 2,500 admits this round. I seem to remember one post that said they expect to have 9,500 admissions. They had 6,000 ED and another 1,500 in the second wave so that leaves 2,000 for this group. The ED group looks like over 50% admit rate and the RD group looks wayyy smaller given that there will be admits from this wave that are from deferred ED. Would be interesting to see those stats. Will you post that information in the press release or on the blog?

As for the balance of EA Dec. admits vs. later ones, please remember that over 60% of our applications came in EA, both EA and RD are treated the same overall, and the EA applicants generally are stronger overall academically because many are looking at scholarships that have earlier timelines, and because students self-select to apply EA or RD based upon their view of their academics.

", for some reason, your post has not displayed. But the answer is that we are looking at the strongest scores, so a low SAT coupled with a strong ACT means we would focus on the ACT. No reason to worry about sending the SAT.

ReplyDeleteI am going to UGA next year; but, I also applied to University of South Carolina, and a month after they accepted my admission, they sent me a letter granting me scholarship money even though I did not apply for scholarship money. Does UGA also send out these late letters with scholarship money?
Well this journey is almost over and hopefully it will have a happy ending for my daughter. Either way, I just wanted to tell you that this blog has been a great tool for us. It has been many, many years since I applied for college and let me tell you things have CHANGED! ReplyDeleteHi DGraves, while we are on the subject of Test scores, I have a question you may be able to help me with. I sent an ACT score and SAT score. I did not take the writing part od the ACT brcause it was my junior year but i did for the SAT. My ACT wa a 25 while my SAT was an 1110 without writing (670 in writing). By the time I saw on the status check that I must take the writing portion of the ACT in order to use it, it was too late to take it again. My SAT does not fall in the mid-range but my ACT does( barely). When looking at applications will admissions counselors not even consider the ACT score because of this or will they only look at one with all of the components(SAT)? And I know that standardized scores count less than other factors like GPA and rigor which I feel confident about, but I feel that it can be what makes it or breaks it for me and I have been curious about the answer for a while.
ReplyDeleteSeth: For the most part, we have already offered all of our scholarships, but there may be a small number that goes out between now and mid-April.
ReplyDeleteAnon: We need to have the writing portion of the ACT in order to use it for review purposes, so no, we would not have taken it into consideration. I will say, though, when looking at the ACT and the SAT, we are looking at the individual subscores, and with the ACT, our focus is more on the subscores that match the SAT areas (English/C. Reading, Math/Math, Writing/Writing). I am guessing if you look at the subscores of the two tests, they might look very similar.

ReplyDeleteMy ACT superscore was 27, and I got a 26 on Math and 34 on English. If only those two subjects counted the average would be a 30, but since I scored lower in Science and Reading it brought the overall composite score way down. How much does Reading and Science scores of the ACT count or did you even consider those subject scores at all?

ReplyDeleteAnon and ACT tester: As I have said a number of times, we look at the ACT overall, but we also specifically use what the ACT and the SAT have determined to be compatible, which are the SAT CR with the ACT English, the SAT math with the ACT math, and the SAT writing with the ACT English/Writing combined. They even post concordance tables to compare these sections. But as I have said, we look at the overall scores and more specifically these areas due to comparison of the two tests.
ReplyDeleteAnon II: First, remember what your mom always said about assuming, as "an amazing SAT" is generally never the answer. Outside groups do not always get data correct, or they have old data, as the 2% is not accurate. We will have a small number of admits in the lower half of their class, though, and it is due to a number of factors. For example, there may be a person who is 4/7, but the decile is not an accurate indicator of the student. Another example would be a student who had a poor first year or so, but has shown amazing growth and challenge over the last 2 years. In addition, we will have some students with special talents (for example a great artist or musician who has been noticed by the accompanying UGA program) whose artistic talents overshadow their decile.
Anon III: We generally notify people on a Friday so students and parents will have the weekend to digest the information and, if angry, cool off before writing or saying something that they then wish they had left unsaid.
OK, So I KNOW what you said about rumors but my daughter was told that there are people that were admitted in early decision that later received letters retracting that decision due to budget cuts for UGA. So she does not believe this is a rumor. I can't imagine that this has occured but can you tell me if this was the case?

Question 1: Does she know anyone that this happened to, or has she ever met anyone in this situation? There are no applicants who have had their admission decisions retracted due to budget cuts. Zero, Zip, Nada.

D.Graves... I was just curious if during this admissions process,do all the counselers use a scorecard or something similiar in deciding who gets in and who doesn't as they review each section of a students app. It seems that would make it a more uniform process.

ReplyDeleteAnon: The word scorecard sounds a little too harsh, but I am guessing every college that does a holistic review process has some sort of form that looks at the different components that are key to their review (like the areas I mentioned in the six part post about file reading). Ours is a detailed process, but one in which we try to be uniform in the way in which we review files.

Concerning the "ACT English/Writing combined" score, what if a student gets an 8 of 12 on writing with an English of 23 on first take (combined of 23), but on second ACT attempt, scores an English of 31 without retaking the essay--does the student get a recalculated combined writing score as if 31 and 8/12 were together? or just stuck with lower? Thanks.

ReplyDeleteEven though my SAT score is right in the middle percentile, I'm most likely not going to get in, because my GPA is way too low and I have made some mistakes that will prevent me from admission to the University of Georgia. However, I'm planning to work hard and transfer to the UGA next year. Regardless of the decision I receive tomorrow, I would like to thank DGraves for all the patience and care you has given to every anxious student ready to start the next stage of their lives. ReplyDeleteAnon, me too, My gpa is low because I messed up my junior year because some devestating things came up and my grades dropped plus I was taking a sorta rigourous courseload like Pre-Calc. The thing is, my senior years are higher then average gpa here at UGA and my freshman/sophmore grades are good also, but I dont know if they even took that into consideration. My SAT/ACT was right below the middle percentile and my rigor is probably the top 25% of my school or Advanced with 3 AP's and numerous Honors.
ReplyDeleteMy teacher recommendation was amazing and I think I had good awards/comm. service/essays/summer activities.
I'd say if I had a better GPA, my chances for admission would have shot up largely. That's why I've been asking so many question about competitiveness.
I've seen people get in with my low GPA, but they had good test scores, whereas I have a bit above average, still not in UGA's 25-75% perentile, but I would say pretty close.
Miracles happen though and I just hope they looked beyond just my juniors grades and considered other things.
Anon I: This is a pretty technical question about the ACT, so I will have to look it up and get back to you if different, but I believe it will calc the highest combined English/Writing.

Anon IV: The ACT will show the superscore.
Anon V: I do not have any ED deferred info, and that might come out later than Friday, as our first focus is just getting decisions out and second getting the overall numbers so people can see what the class looks like.
Transfer Anon: I fully expect that we will be admitting transfers, but it is the number that we are not sure of, so we have to wait until we get a clearer picture before moving forward.
Anon VI: We do not treat EA deferred any differently than RD applicants, either in a positive or negative way. I will say though, that "a large number" does not equal "most". And eventually meant either final decisions in March or off the wait-list.
Anon VII: Generally, the only ones that know are the admission people and the higher administration at UGA, so no one else should know.
Anon VIII: Thanks for thinking of me as legit (especially since I work in the office and read just over 1,400 files this year!). Seriously, though, I am glad that people are using this as their real source of information, and not word of mouth or other so called "admissions advice" sites.
Anthony: Good luck tomorrow, and know that we do look at everything in the file, while trying to look at it in comparison to the other applicants as a whole. My suggestion is not to compare yourself to others that you know that are admitted or not, as you probably will not know all that is in their application.

I am a transient student hoping to be admitted for just the fall semester 2010 from a UGA partner university in the UK. Will my decision come through today too? I applied on paper and it was sent through my university to UGA so think the process might differ a little.

ReplyDeletePam: If a student is admitted but the fireworks do not show, it is generally due to your computer and what images (flash, etc.) is allows to be shown. Other than that, I could not tell you.
