February Wave of Admits

Later this afternoon (Friday, 2/26), we will be releasing acceptance letters for a small group of freshman applicants. These admits, who are primarily Regular Decision (RD) applicants, are students who meet the criteria that UGA admissions used for Early Action (EA) admits. Whenever we release these late February decisions, we always get questions, ranging from "Why didn't I hear" to "Does this mean that more decisions will roll out through the month of March" and so on. for those of you who have been following my blog, here is a quick reminder.

The three freshman decision release dates:

  • Mid December - EA Decisions released
  • Late February - Admit letters for applicants meeting EA admit criteria
  • Late March - Final Decisions for all remaining freshman applicants
Why do we release a small group of February acceptances? Well, if an applicant has applied Regular Decision, have a perfect 4.00 GPA, 8 AP classes in a variety of areas, and a 1600/770 SAT (an actual situation this year), why wouldn't we want to admit this student? Just like with EA admits, there are a group of Regular Decision applicants who are well above what is expected academically, and we want to move forward with admitting these students now. As well, this is a good example of the of how the rumors and myths out there, such as it is easier/harder to be admitted EA/RD, are not true. We are carefully reviewing the applicant pool, and treating them equally regardless of EA/RD.

Please remember, we still have a large amount of file reading, reviewing of the overall applicant pool, and a great deal more admission decisions to make before this year's admission cycle is done, so be patient. Ignore any wild rumors, know that there will still be a substantial number of admit letters to go out, and finish up your senior year strong!

    Anon II: For any decisions we release, the decisions go out both by mail and on the status check. I will update this blog when the decisions are released.

  5. Anon: I did give you an estimate, which is late afternoon. If you want an exact time, then you will disappointed, as I can't give it to you until it actually happens. As well (see above comments), I will update this blog when the decisions are released.

  6. Will decisions for only freshmen be given out today or will some transfer decisions be lumped in as well? If no transfer decisions go out today, when should I expect to hear back if I submitted my application on January 1st and my transcripts were received on January 19th? Does the date an application is received have any bearing on when a decision is made?

  7. Anon: If any transfer decisions were made yesterday, they will be released today, and then the same will happen the next day, and the next, and so on.

Anon: There are a small number of students who applied EA and either were incomplete for EA, completed their application, and met EA standards, or were deferred but then raised up their academic standing to the level that they met EA criteria. Make sure you review some of the previous posts for more explanations on this wave of admits, as I have mentioned these things (and more) earlier.

  10. How many students are generally accepted to the UGA freshmen class, roughly 1500 found out today, but how many were accepted early? What I guess I am trying to ask, how many seats are there in the Freshmen Class?

  11. Concerned Mom: We will not know an exact number until late March, once we review everything about the class (how many people have deposited, how many have said they are going elsewhere, etc). My guess is that we will admit over 9,500 freshman this year, but we will not know an exact number until later on in the process.

    So, rigorous classes isn't EA criteria? & also, why does my child have to suffer the anxiety of waiting another "month or so" to hear a decision? To me that's not fair, and I understand that the reviewing process takes a long time, but whats wrong with reviewing a students file (once or twice), and then making a decision & giving it to them, as other schools do?

  15. why do you want to "move forward with admitting these students now" (those that meet EA criteria). That's their fault if they did not apply early. To me, this whole Feb. wave is a mere way to get the hopes of many RD applicants up, only leaving many of them crushed that they have to wait another month. Why should they that just got accepted be given the "special treatment", when they did not even apply early? I'm sorry, but this is really saddening watching my daughter cry her eyes out, because she believed that she would the Feb. wave so I feel like I have to say something about the way you all do these things. If these "EA criteria" students did not apply early, then they should be treated the same way as RD applicants.

  16. i was bummed i wasnt admitted in the "Feb. wave" but i wasnt crying my eyes out or anything. i'll just have to wait another month. but one thing i wonder is that why doesnt uga do real rolling admissions? because this February early wave is getting a lot of flack.

  17. I agree with the statement above. Why are you all doing this to my child? At least let them know in mid-march, so they can know the next move to take concerning college, because if given a reply towards the end of March, and they don't get in, then the housing they might have preferred at other schools or other issues like this may be gone. I just don't feel like you all are being fair to these RD applicants.

  18. I just had a small question of concern:
    I really want to know how important rigorous classes is concerning your admission factors. I mean you all have said time & time again that it is important, but feel that your answer to this question will help give me clarification:
    Lets say you all were reviewing applicants, and had to choose between two to fill a seat:
    applicant #1:
    3.56 core gpa
    no rigorous classes but took AP
    about 1950 SAT
    applicant #2:
    3.47 core gpa
    all rigorous classes ( Magnet program) & AP
    1880 sat

    who would most likely be chosen?

There are a lot of responses here, so I will do my best to answer them, although please remember, this is a blog that is here to help you understand UGA's admissions review process, criteria, and an overall understanding of UGA admissions. As you might have noticed from the post, this is not the time or place to discuss specific student decisions.

    Anon I: Your question is about a specific situation, so as such, I do not have the details from our vantage point about your file, and I can not get into that situation. But, here are some general ideas that I have covered before in this blog. First, while you state your GPA, our office would have to review it to get our picture of your grades. Secondly, we look at the specific ACT and SAT subscores, not just an overall or composite number. Third, rigor is not determined by the number of AP courses, but by an overall review of your classes vs. what is offered at your school. If you took 4 AP classes, wonderful, but we would look to see if you have taken honors/advanced courses, what areas you have challenged yourself in, etc.

    Concerned mom: Yes, rigor of coursework is looked at, as spelled out in all of our materials about admissions. And we have been upfront about our timelines, so if someone chooses to apply to UGA, they go in knowing the decision dates. As well, most competitive colleges do not have a rolling timeline, and I am also guessing that your child would rather have a decision where we took our time to make a good review, rather than a rushed one. I have answered the number of admits question in another post, but you will also see it covered here in a future post.

    Anon II: While you may have feelings about EA vs RD, I do not think that the parents of the thousands of RD applicants feel the same way as you. We have always stated that it is no harder or easier to be admitted EA vs. RD, and we have done the Feb. wave for a number of years, so they are being treated as we have always treated RD applicants. In addition, they are not getting "special treatment", but just meeting the same criteria as EA students that were admitted.

    Anon III: I am glad that you are mature enough to be okay with us taking our time in our review process, and the reason we can't do a rolling decision is due to the fact that we do not know how many people will apply every year, or how many we can admit. Would you really want me to deny you in Feb., only to then find out in late March that we could have admitted you? I don't think so. We want to make the best decisions possible, and that takes time. Look at GT, UNC, Vandy, UF, etc, and you will see a similar read process situation, with the desire to do the best review possible and make the best decisions possible.

    Anon IV: What exactly are we "doing to your child" that we did not explain in detail in all of our communications, from our web site, mailings, presentations, and this blog? As I have said above, we need time to review these files, and the only way to do this is by a detailed review. As well, with 18,000 applicants, it takes a long time to review them, and I have gone over in great detail about the process. For any colleges with earlier requirements, I would suggest you talk to them about what can be done, from refundable deposits to deferred decisions.

    I suggest that everyone read my blog and try to understand the process. If we could make it quicker, we would (and it would make our lives easier as well!), but that is not possible. As I have said many times, be patient.

Anon I (I would suggest everyone not go by Anonymous, or you might become confused by all the Anon replies): While you raise an important question about rigor, you have brought up a major flaw in understanding a review process. First, the rigor question: We look at what is offered, and what the student has then taken. If you have chosen a magnet program, and have challenged yourself to a high level in AP/IB/honors classes, then we would look very strong at this. I do not understand how a person could take no rigorous classes yet is taking AP, but if a student is not challenging themselves, then it is a major concern for our office.

    Now saying that, every student's situation is different. Did the student who is not challenging themselves as much have an issue (medical, change of schools, new to the country, etc) that prevented them from taking these classes? Did the student who challenged themselves other issues that we look at, from discipline issues, D/F grades, lacking in any sort of activities, etc? As well, an SAT or ACT is not one score, but a combination of subscores that we look at.

    As such, we could not answer your question in any fair way. What I can say is that I would rather have a student who has challenged themselves and made slightly lower grades, rather than one who boosted their GPA while not challenging themselves at all.

    Second, I know that during this February wave, at least from what I understand from the blog, that mid term grades were not taken in account. Will these grades be taken account for the March decision though? Thank you so much again and I'm hopefully look forward to UGA in the fall!

    I read this blog just about everyday and it's so helpful. None of my other schools have this much information about the process so readily available.
    It has definitely kept me informed and less stressed than I would have been otherwise.

    I'm from Florida, and I was wondering if the admissions office has started looking at how many kids from Florida and out of state have withdrawn their applications? The UF decisions were posted about two weeks ago and many kids who applied to UGA as a backup are now going to UF. Will their withdrawals make a difference in the admissions process for out of state students? I know you've said that your office does not look at instate or out of state but could this potentially have any impact at all? Its frustrating to see how many kids from my area (tampa) were admitted EA but don't have any intention of going to UGA.

    I was accepted to UF and I am hoping not to have to go there :)

  23. Chris: Yes, mid-term grades are seriously looked at in the file reading process, and will have an impact on the decisons we release in March. In fact, I am guessing I have called 15 schools in the last 2 weeks to ask about fall grades for certain students. As I have said to a few other posters, thank you for your mature and patient reply, as this is one of the factors we also look at in the review process.

    non-Gator: We are not looking at how many students from any specific state are planning on attending or not attending, but we are looking at the number of deposits and withdrawls we have received from the admitted students as a whole. It is frustrating to us as well when a student applies to UGA and has no intention of attending, but we have no idea of a student's intentions (and we want students to have several options), so we treat everyone as a serious applicant.   26. Anon: I do not have the mid 50% range for these students (too much file reading to do a detailed analysis yet), but I can give you a few details. As I have said before, these numbers only give you a limited view of this group, but the Feb. admitted group had over a 3.90 GPA, over a 1300/620 SAT, and took a challenging courseload, from numerous honors/advanced classes to averaging over 5 AP/IB classes. In other words, this was a real strong group!

  28. Anon: There are no set cut points for EA admission criteria, as we are looking at multiple variables in connection with each other to make this determination. I would suggest you do a search for Early Action in the upper right hand corner search field to get a better understanding of our process, and how we look different factors.

  29. Amazed: Just remember, the numbers we list are not "criteria", but are the mean averages for this group. Some applicants will have a higher GPA and a lower test score, there will be variable levels of rigor, etc. But yes, these are some very amazing students. Understand, though, that we are also seeing some amazing students in the read process as well!

  30. I don't understand why these parents are so upset. I know it is very frustrating for them to wait another month, but your admissions process is clearly outlined on your website (you have the best website of any college I have seen). I have two children who are waiting on decisions -- a daughter as a transfer student and a son who was deferred EA. I was thrilled that he was deferred and will patiently wait over three months to find out his decision. While other colleges are rejecting him for his low SAT score, UGA has given him a chance, and I appreciate that greatly.

  31. I agree with patient mother. but my question is, if students that have been admitted tell you or have told you that they will not be attending UGA, does that increase the number of students that you all admit in late march?

    hopeful and praying: We monitor both students who send in a committment deposit and students who decline an offer of admission very closely. We admit a larger number of students then will enroll already, knowing from years of past analysis that a certain % will not attend UGA. If we see a drastic change from what we are expecting in either direction, we can then make some adjustments to admission offers.

One more question: I see that alot of students from my high school have already been accepted early or feb. wave...does that mean my chances of getting in in the last wave of desicions are slim, since i am from the this high school, where the number admitted early was high?

  34. hopeful and praying: Your chances of admission are based upon what you are like overall during our overall review balanced against the overall applicant pool. It has nothing to do with the number of people admitted from your school, what zip code you live in, what part of GA or the US, etc.

    I would suggest you read the link about the top ten urban legends that is on the right side of my blog, and you will get a better idea of what we do and do not look at.

  35. So grade wise. In a perfect world, 9th and 10th grade year would be pass/fail and real grades would start Junior year when students started actually realizing there will be life after high school. Looking at the numbers you posted above for the Feb decisions two out of the three numbers are based mostly on Junior/Senior year. In our county you can't take AP until Junior year and SAT/ACT's are started in Junior year.

    But, that silly thing called a transcript is started back in 9th grade. 14 year olds who have no clue what college entails much less how those grades will influence them later on.

    Stating that. If the GPA is less than stellar (oh say 3.4) but SAT/AP load meet the above numbers, do you look at the transcipt in "chronological" order. Just starting high school they just don't grasp "oh this will matter later I promise you".

  36. Flip-flop: In my world, I rely heavily on the 9th and 10th year grades, as it shows me how the students are doing in the classroom. As well, if they do not know that their 9th and 10th grade work is important, they should (my 2 kids, who are in 5th and 7th grade, do!). In addition, we do look at the rigor of a student's entire high school career, not just the last 2 years.

    Saying that, we do want to see if a student is on the upswing or is on a downward path in their grades. As I have said though, the most important factors are how a student does in the classroom, and the challenge of their courses. The test scores help us, but they are not the most important thing by any means.

  37. somewhere on the admissions website, there is a statement about rigorous classes, and how important it is, and it goes on to say that its really not ok to have taken rigorous classes but yet have a "non-competitive" gpa. what is a "non-competitive" gpa, considering the fact that the student has taken rigorous classes? below 3.4?

  38. Anon: It is hard to define it exactly, but (unless there are unusual circumstances), I would say that a GPA below roughly a 3.20 is fairly non-competitive, even with a rigorous class schedule. This is not so much a defining point that we have set up. When you look at the strength of the students who apply as a whole, it starts to look tough at that level of GPA. I am not saying an applicant should write themselves off at this point, but it should cause some real concern.

  39. How many students have already accepted their admission already? Also,there are limited amounts of AP classes in my school. For instance before senior year, there were only 3 AP classes available to take and I only took 1. However, during my senior year I took 1 first semester and currently 2 right now and a lot of honors. There are a total of only 6 available for the time I was in HS. Will that be taken into consideration for having a chance of getting accepted. And I saw on your past blogs that trends are a factor. My SAT score for the Verbal section was really low and didn't match up to my grades in school, but I increased it after the next test. Will that also be a plus in the admissions? Thanks.

  40. Anon: I have not run that number lately (we have a person in our office that does a great deal of the statistical analysis, so I am not focused on deposits right now), so I could not say.

    When we look at a student's curriculum, we base it on what is available and what a student decided to take. This is true not only for AP, but for the range of classes. As for your SAT, we are only focused on the highest score, so we would not then see the earlier lower score.
